Leased Car In Spain by deecat We traveled to Spain in 1999, and since we were to be there for 38 days, we knew from our experiences in Italy that it was cheaper to LEASE a car if you are going to stay over 17 days than to rent a car for that period of time. We went through our AAA [American Automobile Association] to lease the car. They go through a company in France. The representative in France met us at the Madrid Airport. He gave us the keys, all the papers, a "tour" of the car and how to operate it, important telephone numbers in case of an emergency, and directions of how to leave the airport. The man was efficient, well versed, and quite friendly. The car that we leased was the 1999 Renault LaGuna. It was a great 5-speed shift car with lots of pick-up. There were three adults traveling together with our luggage, and we had more than ample room. The advantages of leasing are that you receive a brand new car; the insurance is included in the price, and the assistance that you are given if you need it is extraordinary. Needless to say, the fact that it is less expensive than renting a car for that amount of time also plays into the decision to lease. My husband Allan loved this car so very much that he truly wanted to take it home with us. Spain is a mountainous country, and this car performed excellently. by bijo69 The night train is a good way of travelling around without loosing a day. The train are quite modern and prices reasonable. You can choose between 3 different sleeping classes and 2 different seating classes. I took the train from Ourense to Madrid and paid 38 EUR for the cheapest class. Leave a Comment

MAP of our route...from Lourdes to Artiés by Lady_Mystique Our trip to Artiés in Spain was a continuation of our stop-over and visit to Lourdes in France. My friend wanted to stop and buy some Spanish saffron, oranges, and a few other items that were less expensive in Spain, so we just kept going and added Artiés to our exploration of the Pyrenees area. The black bull by SirRichard These balck bulls that you will find in any spanish main road were originally advertising signs of a national wine prodecer (Osborne). Some years ago the road billboards were banned in the spanish roads, so every ad at the side of the roads should be removed. BUT, as this bull had become a kind of a "national icon", they pardoned him, just taking off any reference to the wine company... You will find many of them in the main roads of Spain. Funicular view by hopang When you visit the resort at Montserrat Mountains from the city of Barcelona, don't miss the opportunity to visit the summit by funicular railway known as Funicular de Sant Joan! The summit of the mountain is known as Saint Jerome which is situated at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level. You are guaranteed a 360 degree view of the surrounding areas and the valleys from the summit. Several hiking trails are located at the top with opportunities to take many lovely souvenir snapshots! Due to its height, the air is quite cool even during the hot summer months. The funicular train travels at a gradient of up to 65% which is rather steep with breath-taking view of the railway track and the resort below. It looks quite scary as well! The funicular railway is operating between 7.00 a.m. and 7.00 p.m. daily. Warning: The queue is quite long during the summer months. You may have to queue up for about one hour for the next furnicular to go down. So it is important to adjust your time accordingly. It is also possible to walk down the well-prepared staircases beside the track, but it is not recommended. Don't miss the ride on a funicular railway when you visit Montserrat Mountains on your vacation! Leave a Comment

by bijo69 Spain has an excellent network of intercity buses. You'll be able to get nearly everywhere by bus. There are a couple of different companies which also offer different services. I once took a so called "luxury" bus with very comfy seats and unlimited supply of coffee, tea and soft drinks. Of course these services are a bit more expensive, so check before buying a ticket. Here some links to bigger companies: http://www2.alsa.es/portal/index.asp http://www.arriva.es Leave a Comment

by bijo69 The company FEVE operates a couple of regional train in some parts of Spain. I travelled from Ortigueira/Galicia to Santander on Feve trains. It's a great (and economical) way to see the country. You'll need to have some time and patience though, trains are slow and not very frequent. Leave a Comment
