If you don't read Spanish

by unaS

If you don't read Spanish the RENFE site can be very complicated to use. Actually even the Spanish people I know say that the RENFE site is enough to make you pull your hair out.I found a very helpful explanation on using the site - see the website link below.I strongly recommend reading it before trying to buy a ticket.I actually printed it all out (9 pages!) and followed the instructions religiously before I succeeded in buying my tickets - after I had gone m-a-d trying to do it on my own. Note: The article says that the site is optimized for Microsoft Internet Explorer, but I used Firefox and had no difficulties from that angle at any rate.Remember to buy your tickets 62 days in advance for the 60% Web discount or 40% Estrella discount. If you wait too long:1. The discounted tickets will be sold out.2. After 15 days previous to the trip, no discounts are offered. The Web...

Rail travel and Eurailpass thoughts in Spain

by mccalpin

The national rail website in Spain is www.renfe.es . It is not the most user-friendly of websites (every time they "enhance" it, it gets worse ;-) ), but you should spend some time surfing on it to get a feel for train times, types, and fares. Here are some general notes:1. Spain, like most European countries, now prices trains as "regional" and "premium". The regional trains are like the trains of the old days in Europe: the fare was more or less per kilometer (so, quite predictable), and seat reservations were usually not possible, so if you have a ticket, you can get on (and, yes, on rare occasions, you stand in the aisle). These fares are typically fairly cheap. For that reason, while the Eurailpass is convenient (you can board any of these trains without reservations or otherwise visiting the ticket office - just hop on), it is no longer the travel bargain that it once was as the...

Express in 1964

by grandmaR

This is what I wrote to my mother about the trip from Valencia to Granada in 1964:Thursday, July 30, 1964 - en route to GranadaDear Mother,Well the train is a madhouse. It is a good thing I have a seat reservation altho there are some unreserved which I could fight for.I'm glad you can get my somewhat disjointed documents into good form. (Ed note: when I gave her very thin airmail stationary. I had NO idea she would use it for anything but the first letter, nor that she would write on jiggly trains on BOTH sides of the paper!)I'm sorry to hear the summer there is so bad. I don't know what the heat here has been, but it has been dry.I have now been on the train all day - since 8.00 (leaving at 8.30) and it is now 5.30. We arrive in Granada sometime after 9 if the train is on time. I shall be a little surprised if it is. The rule on Spanish trains is: take an express and expect to be late....

The RENFE site is a crazy business. Sometimes you have to try 4 or 5 times to get your ticket. Don't give up, just go back later and do it again. I speak from experience! A bit frustrating but I did finally manage to buy all my tickets. Some trips, from smaller cities are worth doing with a stop. For instance, from Jerez de la Frontera to Madrid.Direct there are only 2 trains a day. The morning train doesn't have a "web" or an "estrella" discount. Only the one that get in at 2100. Even with the discount (the evening train) the price is higher by quite a lot than if you take two trains - one from Jerez d.l. Frontera to Sevilla, and then a bit later from Sevilla to Madrid, the latter has the 60% web discount if bought 62 days in advance of your trip. Also there are many, many more trains to choose from and you also get the 60% web discount, if you purchase the ticket 15 - 62 days in...

By Funicular de Sant Joan, Montserrat Mountains

by hopang

When you visit the resort at Montserrat Mountains from the city of Barcelona, don't miss the opportunity to visit the summit by funicular railway known as Funicular de Sant Joan! The summit of the mountain is known as Saint Jerome which is situated at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level. You are guaranteed a 360 degree view of the surrounding areas and the valleys from the summit. Several hiking trails are located at the top with opportunities to take many lovely souvenir snapshots! Due to its height, the air is quite cool even during the hot summer months. The funicular train travels at a gradient of up to 65% which is rather steep with breath-taking view of the railway track and the resort below. It looks quite scary as well! The funicular railway is operating between 7.00 a.m. and 7.00 p.m. daily. Warning: The queue is quite long during the summer months. You may have to queue...

Spanish Trains

by grandmaR

The express train from Paris got to the Spanish boarder about midnight, and we had to switch trains because the Spanish trains used a different gauge track. It looks like that some trains can go all the way through now on some kind of dual gauge track. When I was here in July 1964, this is what I wrote to my mother:I found at the border that there were many Americans on the train. I got my passport out quickly and it was stamped for the first time. But the customs official just gave me a glassy-eyed stare, saw my passport and chalked my baggage. I wasted time in the currency line thinking I might need to get a Wagon-Lit, but anyway I would have the money. My compartment mates in Spain are another American girl who has just now waked up and told me that she is American, two Spanish men and a Spanish couple. The man knows some English. In case you were wondering, I didn't get a W-L and I...

Las Golondrianas (also known as the swallows) is the name of a boat cruise operator located at Portal de la Pau at the waterfront harbour of Port Vell at the end of Las Ramblas in front of the statue of Christopher Columbus. Several trips are conducted daily from the harbour. This is a harbour and coastline sightseeing return trip cruise to Port Olimpic lasting approximately 1½ hours and costs just 12.00 euros per person and half price for children. You are looking at the city of Barcelona from a different perspective! Don't miss the boat cruise when you are in Barcelona for your vacation!
