How to buy promo fares at Renfe.es

by mccalpin

For people who want to buy discounted fares online at www.renfe.es please see the following...There are two promotional fares that can be bought online, with the usual caveats of limited seats, expensive to change, and must be bought in advance. There are the WEB fare and the Estrella ('Star') fare. The WEB Tariff applies only to trips at least 15 days in the future, and that the Estrella Tariff applies only to trips more than 7 days in the future. When you plan a trip through the regular RENFE website (www.renfe.es), enter your starting and ending destinations, pick a date, and select "IDA" (one way). If your planned trip is more than 7 or 15 days out, and if there are seats eligible for these fares available, then under the column headed "Tarifas Promo", you will (may) see the star and the "W" logos with fares on the right.Select a train that you want (that preferably shows these icons),...

Bus Travel in Spain

Around Spain by regional train

by bijo69

The company FEVE operates a couple of regional train in some parts of Spain. I travelled from Ortigueira/Galicia to Santander on Feve trains. It's a great (and economical) way to see the country. You'll need to have some time and patience though, trains are slow and not very frequent.

Around Spain by bus

by bijo69

Spain has an excellent network of intercity buses. You'll be able to get nearly everywhere by bus. There are a couple of different companies which also offer different services. I once took a so called "luxury" bus with very comfy seats and unlimited supply of coffee, tea and soft drinks. Of course these services are a bit more expensive, so check before buying a ticket. Here some links to bigger companies:http://www2.alsa.es/portal/index.asphttp://www.arriva.es

Stay away from Vueling Airlines!

by oceania26

By far the worst airline I've flown with!My flight was to depart 7:20am so I arrived at the airport at 5:30am. Since the Madrid metro does not start working until 6:00am, I had to pay for a 30 euro. So I get to the airport at 530 only to be told that flight has been delayed by one hour. Great, I just wasted 30euros on the taxi instead of 1 euro if I had taken the metro. So 8:30 rolls around and there's no boarding call. I check the screen and see the time has been changed to 12:20!! No announcement, no nothing. Finally we were given 3 options. Get a refund, fly another day or get a 12 euro voucher for lunch while we wait. Since I already had bookings in Lisbon, I decided to wait.So a little after 12:20 (that was supposed to be our take off time) we finally the boarded the small/tight plane only to have to wait another 2 hours on board!! They didn't have enough sense to use those 5 hours...

FREE TRANSPORT

by MaheshSamtani

There is a website that offers you to travel from one Spanish city to another or even in the same city. It can be accessed at the following link - http://www.shareling.es/demands.htmlAll you have to do is well in advance post your demand or needs of travel indicating from which city to another you wish to travel and people who would be travelling the same route and looking for company or just simply wanting to do a good deed would contact you and share their vehicle with you. A good way of cutting costs and making friends while you are in Spain. This is totally FREE to use unless you want to share some expenses at your wish with the owner of the vehicle.Note: I have not tried this service, which seems to be new (November 2007) so kindly take the necessary precautions. This website also allows the possibility of travelling between different countries.

ALSA coaches within Spain and beyond!

by mollymoo0oo0

Standard coach/long distance bus service, no frills but plenty of pit stops (from my experience of the Málaga-Madrid journey). This company covers Spain and also travels to other European countries. With competitive airline prices, it´s not always the cheapest option but maybe be a little more eco-friendly and certainly avoids all the airport stress!Website available in Spanish and English.

Improvements in Transportation in Spain

by deecat

Changes had to be made within Spain in the last 30 years concerning transportation: AutomobilesMany new roads were built or widened to cope with the huge increase in automobile use. About 90% of people who travel in Spain do so by automobile; 75% of all goods are transported by road, too.The most problems with traffic happen in the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, & Seville. Also, along the coast in the summer, when all the resorts are filled, traffic is a real headache. On most highways [autopistas], you have to pay a toll, although it's not very expensive.Speed limits in Spain allow drivers on highways to travel at up to 80 miles an hour [130 km an hour]. While in Spain for 38 days, we leased a car [stick shift], and Allan loved it so much, he wanted to take the car home with us!Train One big problem in Spain has to do with railroads. The Spanish railroad lines are wider apart than those in...

We LEASED a Car For Use In Spain

by deecat

We traveled to Spain in 1999, and since we were to be there for 38 days, we knew from our experiences in Italy that it was cheaper to LEASE a car if you are going to stay over 17 days than to rent a car for that period of time.We went through our AAA [American Automobile Association] to lease the car. They go through a company in France. The representative in France met us at the Madrid Airport. He gave us the keys, all the papers, a "tour" of the car and how to operate it, important telephone numbers in case of an emergency, and directions of how to leave the airport. The man was efficient, well versed, and quite friendly. The car that we leased was the 1999 Renault LaGuna. It was a great 5-speed shift car with lots of pick-up. There were three adults traveling together with our luggage, and we had more than ample room. The advantages of leasing are that you receive a brand new car; the...
