Central Holidays

Quite a few years ago we did an independent trip with Central Holidays, the Heart of Spain, that took us from Madrid to Seville to Cordoba to the Costa del Sol (Torremolinos). They arranged the trains, 1/2 day sightseeing in Madrid and Seville and hotels, we arranged our own air on Iberia which was just starting up from Chicago, something ridiculous like $279 round trip.This is my favorite way to travel, have someone else take care of the pesky details but you are not stuck on a group tour, I wish more companies did packages like this. Could you book the items cheaper on your own? Probably but then I'd spend endless hours researching hotels in 4 different cities and figuring out train schedules, sometimes it's just a relief to have that all taken care of!!!

Trains

The train system, as well as the bus system, in Spain is very safe, clean and efficient. We took trains and busses everywhere without ever booking ahead. If you can afford it, with us it was more of a matter of conveience traveling with a toddler, I would give the rapid train (AVE) a try. It runs through the countries major cities and takes a fraction of the time of the regular trains. Take into account that it cost more than twice the amount of the normal fairs.

EuroFerrys to Tangiers

We took the EUROFERRYS from Algeciras to Tangiers to spend the day there on a tour. We crossed the Strait of Gibraltar to get to Tangiers. The Ferry ride was very pleasant . There was a snack bar on board if you got hungry. Make sure you bring a valid passport.

Bus from Torremolinos to Mijas

We took the bus from Torremolinos to the town of Mijas. It took about an hour and the bus wound its way up steep narrow roads. It was quite an experience in itself. The price was an amazing 1.23euros per person one way so it was a very economical way of visiting Mijas, a lot cheaper than taking a tour. Plus you can come and go when you want.

Fly off peak for cheap access to mountains

If you are travelling to the high mountains of Spain flexibility and the ability to travel mid-week can get you some unusual bargains.A number of gateways (Barcelona, Perpignan, Girona, Toulouse) exist to the Pryenees and Malaga is a great access point to the Sierra Nevada.

Night train

The night train is a good way of travelling around without loosing a day. The train are quite modern and prices reasonable. You can choose between 3 different sleeping classes and 2 different seating classes.I took the train from Ourense to Madrid and paid 38 EUR for the cheapest class.

Beware of dividing trains!

The Spanish rail network is variable. One curiosity to be aware of is that the trains can split, with some coaches going one direction and others the other.This happened to me in Miranda del Ebro, with the buffet coach disappearing into the sunset leaving us foodless for 3 hours on the slow train to Salamanca!
