Bandidos

by Birgie

Spanish friends were warning me about being robbed at monuments like the Alhambra gardens and other such parks and places where you might be wandering alone. I hadn't had any sense of trouble until my daughter and I went up alone to see the "Castillo" in Fuengirola. It's wooded and hilly. There were very few people around, we only saw a couple small family groups go up there and we were about to come back down the hill on the path when a man, around 30 years old passed by us sitting on the wall, he literally rubbed right past my legs and then he went and sat on the hill nearby and kept looking around and back at us. My instincts said I should get out of there, so I when I heard a family coming up the hill we made our move and went back down the hill past him. The number for general emergency in Spain is 112. I had a mobile phone with me and I always keep in touch with friends there since...

Bullfighting

by DanielF

Bullfighting is one of the best known aspects of the Spanish culture and supporters of this cruel activity still claim it is the "National Fiesta". In reality, though, an overwhelming majority of the population disapprove of these practices. Nevertheless, the banning of such inhuman treatment to animals is not yet an issue in Spain, as the fans of bullfighting have successfully linked many aspects of their Fiesta with the deepest Spanish identity, and its suppression is not likely to be in the political agenda for the near future, this bloody activity having being specifically excluded from the legislation against animal cruelty. Not even are the intellectual classes distancing themselves from that horror. Rather the opposite, bullfighting seems to arouse romantic emotions even among the most liberal of the thinkers and praising it seems to equate having an appreciation for arts and...

ETA

by blint

ETA is a terrorist group from the Pais Vasco (Basque Country), basically what they are 'fighting for' is the liberty of the Pais Vasco. In other words they wish to separate from the rest of Spain. They are in fact very similar to The IRA, in Northern Ireland. ETA stands for Euskadi Ta Askatasuna. Euskadi is the name all people from Pais Vasco call themselves. Ta means and, and the last word means liberty!ETA has been going for a long time, from about the 50's or 60's, when the Dictator Franco was still in charge of Spain. Under Franco the people of Pais Vasco and Catalunya suffered from repression of their languages and identity (among other things). This is not the case now, though many still want to be separate. For years the Government refused to acknowledge or talk to the terrorist group. Recently Zapatero our current president gave it a go to no avail. They will not lay down their...

Teaching in Spain.

by blint

Please see my Cádiz or Granada page tips on this which as basically accurate for working in the south of Spain. To avoid bad contract and bad pay try working in the North of Spain where you shouldn’t work for less than 1000 euros. You can even expect to earn 1,200-1,500 if you are lucky for a 27 hour contract. They will give you a good contract in the North too (which is impossible in the South) and pay ALL your social security (Which they don't in the South). You may also get your flight paid for, a paid holiday at the end of the contract or accommodation included (again this is a no no in the South). The North of Spain is often overlooked for the sunny south, but although it does get cold in winter the north is incredible. The people are NOT cold. It may take a little longer to get to know them, but once you do they are your friends for life. In the south it's easier to make friends, but...

Spanish men! (Sorry guys)

by blint

Ladies be warned that Spanish men can be really....er....vocal or obvious if they think you are attractive. Old men are the worst: they will walk passed you and mumble 'Que guapa eres' in a really sleazy manner!Old and young alike will stop what they are doing (even if they are carrying heavy furniture) and stare at you until you disappear into the distance!Others in cars and motos will not only beep at you but stare at you in their rear view mirrors until they nearly cause a car crash! They are still suffering fro the Franco era bless them. Plus the fact because it's so hot (especially in the south) they have to cope with woman wearing short dresses all year round! Some may find it a compliment, but I hate to tell you lads that I for one DON'T like it. I'm a not a lump of meat or some image put on the planet for men to stare at. There is a time/place and nicer way to tell someone they are...

Taxis

by blint

It is sad to say that in many places such as Madrid, Malaga or Sevilla the taxi drivers often try and take advantage of 'rich' tourists and bump up the fairs for unsuspecting tourists that have recently arrived and have no idea about the prices here, especially if you are from a country that don't use euros. Therefore ALWAYS ask them how much the trip will be before getting in the taxi (ask a couple if you can to compare prices) and ask them if they have a price list and if you can see it if they do. Another wise thing to do is take their taxi licence number or ask for a receipt so if you think you have been ripped off afterwards you can try and get your money back or even go to the police!!!!!Beware of fake taxi drivers in airports to especially in Malaga as I have heard of this phenomenon happening there. Make sure you get a taxi from the official taxi rank and not accepting a ride...

rental car - hidden costs

by patrickvab

We rented a car with Europcar in Roquetas del Mar for four days with full insurance (extra 15 euro/day) for peace of mind. We asked the receptionist about any possible extra costs. The answer: only fuel (always return car with full tank) and police tickets. Sounded ok. During the renting time we had a flat tire which was replaced with the spare tire without problems.Upon returning the car to the lease company we informed the receptionist about the flat tire. She told us we had to pay for the repair of the tire! Actually the tires, roof and underside of the car are NOT included in the full insurance. We remembered the receptionist about our question of any extra costs with a full insurance. A hefty discussion followed. We asked her if she could show us where this was written in the contract. She gave us a contract (2 pages of small print) but refused to show where it was written so we...

This is Europe?

by william_44

I've been to Europe a couple of times, using Eurail. Whereas most of the northern countries like France, Germany, Holland, Sweden etc. have timetables that are correct to the exact minute, Spain seems to be tainted with a Mexico-like befuddlement. Maybe it's the language but the trains are late...sometimes HOURS late...as a rule. It's totally off the wall. I hung around the station in Madrid for hours waiting for my train to limp in.

Topless Bathers in Tossa del Mar; Watch Your Man!

by deecat

I didn't know where else to put this so here goes: [Keep in mind, this is "tongue in cheek humor!"]It could be dangerous for a relationship if your mate becomes too "interested" in the sites on the beach at Tossa del Mar (the topless bathers). The picture is the least offensive of the ones we took from atop the bridge over the beach. But, I do have another point to make. I won't name the country, but there are older women from this particular country who are quite heavy and well beyond the "skimpy" bathing suit days; yet, they bath topless or sometimes in the nude. It is not a pleasant sight. But, I guess when in Rome"[ or this case, Spain]...as a visitor, I learn to live with it.All kidding aside, I do think that it is a good idea to know whether the beach allows topless, complete nudity, or swim wear, especially if you have children.

Safe, Safe Country...However...

by DannyBoy2121

Spain is about as safe as it gets. You will rarely find any serious crimes committed here. With that being said, petty theft is quite common in many areas...typically, the larger cities. Madrid and Barcelona are the places where you can expect this the most. My friend got pickpocketed on the metro in Madrid, depite having his wallet in his front pocket. It was done by a group of about 5 females. He said that as they were leaving the crowded metro one of them sort of touched him on the shoulder. He thought it was kind of strange and a few moments later it hit him. He checked his pockets, but by then the group was long gone and so was his wallet. I also met a traveler who lost his whole backpack (with passport, documents, etc. inside). He was carrying two bags and said that someone threw ketchup on the bag that he was wearing (he was holding the other one). He then set the bag he was...
