Animals

by ant1606

Not really a warning or dangers tip here, rather a comment on animals rights. In the old part of Granada we saw a bunch of kids proudly showing off by brandishing a poor bird of prey. The animal was blindfolded and seemed to be frustrated by the number of people stopping by to touch it.Be responsible. Animals are not toys.

Exchanging money

by monicarc

I don't recall seeing this in other countries (but I could be wrong), but many of the currency exchange locations only give you a "good" deal if you are changing a large amount of currency (like 2 thousand dollars). If not, like my husband & I were, you get a really sucky rate & might as well have changed your money at the airport. so, watch out for places that have separate exchange rates, based on the amount you are exchanging. This happened to us in the Sevilla train station, but we also saw it in Madrid in the Puerta del Sol (when you go up to the store front, there is like 3 large colums of the various exchange rates). Try to exchange your money in banks--don't forget, they close at 2pm!!

Ripoff Long Distance....

by lcymet

Don't use the posted credit card international call numbers plastered over the telefonica payphones all over spain. They will charge you a fortune, $10 connection fee and a minimum 5 minute call. My 1 minute call to Canada from Madrid cost me $42.

KEEP SAFE

by LoriPori

Most visitors to Spain do not experience problems. Violent crime is rare. Although assaults against foreigners are infrequent, reports of such attacks in connection with petty crime are a concern. Petty crime occurs, particualarly during holidays and festivals. Pickpockets and purse snatchers working in pairs or groups are active mainly in airports, train and bus stations and near tourist attractions. Avoid unlit areas, especially at night.Ensure that personal belongings, passports and other travel documents are secure. Keep a copy of your passport identification page, driver's licence, airline tickets and credit cards

by acemj

I'm warning you, you might be in danger of not being able to see everything you want to! Spain is a big country! Fortunately, they are working on improving rail connections and domestic flights are becoming more numerous and affordable. Check Iberia and Spanair's websites for flight information.

MEON VILLAS - DANGEROUS EQUIPMENT

by philwing

Meon Villas is a large UK based Villa rental company that supply dangerous, unchecked villas across Europe. Our holiday was an absolute nightmare and you should not use Meon Villas, or visit CASA THAIPAN. In a catalogue of disasters I'd like to say this was a one off but we foolishly used them again after having to complain about the number of visitors to their so called Private Villas. This holiday the 'scheduled' flights they booked for us with Monarch were not actually with Monarch and were subject to a 10-hour delay outbound and 3 hours inbound. When we got to Malaga there was no Meon rep as promised. The directions to the villa were wrong so we had to wait over an hour for their '24 hour' concierge to arrive to show us where to go. The villa, which slept 8, had no cot and no highchair as ordered so we had to share a bed with our toddler. When the high chair arrived the next day it...

The Spanish sweet tooth!

by timtregenza

It is probably true to say that the Spanish have a sweet tooth. To give an example, when there was a Marks and Spencers in Bilbao, they had to give out extra sachets of sugar with the yoghurt because it was not sweet enough for local taste!Ok, so be prepared for prepared desserts and sweets to be very sweet. If you have a young child, watch out for the baby food as it will often be sweetened. Read the label. You can by Hipp organic foods (unsweetened) from branches of El Corte Ingles.

open internet access - hard to find

by brightstorm

Not exactly danger, but the internet is not so spread around in the southern spain (I bet the situation is better in Madrid & Barcelona). Internet café-s seem to be an article of niche, for Example I did not find any internet access in one of the biggest and most luxury shopping center in Alicante, the situation was the same in Valencia in the "corte ingles" shopping center. You can usually find internet from the hotels & guesthouses where you spend the night, but consider the computers are relatively slow and so is the connection speed, if any. If the net is "down" this will be an issue of "manana".The reason is that the country is large so preading the high-speed internet takes more time. In many countrysides you find the dial-up connection, or a little faster ISDN connection. The support for the internet products can be slow, so people prefer slower but more reliable products that they...

I learned about pickpockets first hand (get it?)

by OCNJBritt

I know you always hear about pick pockets when you travel, I never really ever heeded those warnings though...until now...I was the victim of an ATTEMPTED pick pocket. My backpack while on my back was unzipped and opened by a young non-descript girl who i later called, la ladron. Fortunately, though, for my keen sense for criminal intent (joke),I felt the tug on my pack and turned quickly to see her scurrying off in a crowd of tourists...Fortunately, she didn't make off with anything and I should thank her for wisening me up, now I always wear a bag across my chest or diagonal on my person..Gracias a la ladron!
