Watch your wallet and other valuables

by AKtravelers

We were aware that pickpocketing and other "petty" theft is more of a problem in Europe than in the US, and this was our 10th trip to the continent. still, we were almost victims of a wallet snatching. After visiting the Prado we stopped at a sidewalk cafe within view of the fountain in the picture. We were tire, so we ordered a cool pitcher of Sangria to relax as we lookedthrough our guidebooks to pick the next adventure. Soon, three women from three generations of proble Gypsies came up to our table and began shuffling through our books. Worried that our books might be stolen, three of us reached forward toward the table to control the fracas. Luckily, Jaimie had the presence of mind to realize the goal might be something more valuable and spied the older woman near Marie's purse, which was sitting on the seat beside her. He grabbed her arm and she dropped Marie's wallet. A very close...

Buildings Being Restored

by Paul2001

Okay I think every well seasoned traveler knows that century old buildings have to be restored from time to time. So here is a warning. It is not an uncommon event that you will go to see a specific art treasure only to find that it is covered with scaffolding. This happened to me when I went to visit the Convento de San Esteban. Famed for its Plateresque facade, I could see none of it. So if such items are very important to you, maybe you should check ahead with the local tourist board.

More Stereotypes .... Mañana mañana

by Carmela71

Spanish people we have are famous for the typical sentence of Mañana mañana ..... (tomorrow, tomorrow)Well as all bureaucracy, government and other administrative agencies there are slow... like in all the countries I guessCorreos (Post Office) can be your nightmare sometimes since it has been recently privatised.Telefonica (Main Telephone company) This is my biggest nightmare lol, but I have friends in UK with the same problems with their phone companies (Orange, BT) so I guess is general. But in Marbella where I live that many foreigners have business, I founded that Spanish people lately are more reliable and punctual than the foreigners.... I have heard many more times the .... Mañana mañana .. in English (tomorrow, tomorrow) than in Spanish ...

Stereotypes of the Guide Books

by Carmela71

First ... OPEN HOURS .... It vary from cities or areas....Is typical said about closing at lunch time ...But many supermarkets, malls, shopping centers, and places as Corte Ingles, Hipercor, Alcampo, etc... are open 12 hours per day, and some supermarkets as Open cor as open 20 hours per day .....BANKS Ok Till a few years ago the timetable was from 8,30 till 2,00 .. (even if there were working inside from 8.00 till 3.00) but many banks had changed, for example Solbank opens from 9.00 till 16.00 (or maybe 17.00) and Halifax Hispania is open till 18.00 or longer (even more working hours than in UK)SANGRIA Not all Spanish people we drink Sangria lol I promise...

Botas de vino

by SirRichard

These recipients to carry wine are one of the most useful things I have seen. Instead of carrying the wine in fragile glass bottles, you can carry it to picnics... in these leather bags with a cap.BUT if you buy one, you have to heat it a little and blow to inflate it before filling it with wine! Don't try to open it with a knife, you can ruin it down...

Crime in Spain.

by Beach_dog

No cause for concern, Spain has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe, but as with everywhere it has increased over the last few years.Particularly vulnerable are tourists to pick-pockets, certainly so in cities, such as Madrid, Sevilla, Granada and Valencia. So if if are walking through crowds be aware of your possessions.Another crime tourists are vulnerable too is drive by bag snatching, this is particularly the case in the seaside resorts. Keep your bag away from the kerbside side of the pavements and keep a tight grip on them. It so easy for the passing moped, motorcycle or car to make a grab for it as they pass often leaving you still attatched to them, causing injury. This said it's not very common, just be aware. If you are staying in an apartment or hotel room, make sure you lock all doors on exit from the room. If you have a terrace that can be accessed from below or a...

SPAIN and DRIVING THERE

by AmericanandSpaniard

I'm an Expat and after living and driving here for 5 years, I wish to lend this advice........IF you can absolutely avoid driving in Spain, do so. If you must drive in Spain, be extremely cautious at all times and be prepared for drivers to do almost anything. The dangers range from: other drivers cutting you off in any situation (imaginable and unimaginable) anywhere, to dangerous tailgating at very high speeds, not yeilding right of way to other drivers, or pedestrians in crosswalks. The list goes on and on.FACT: Spain has the highest incidence of automobile accidents and automobile related fatalities in the entire European Union. In general, Driving in EU can be crazy and dangerous, but more so in Spain.Although, Spain has the most stringent requirements to attain a driving license, the oldwest free for all manner of driving doesn't cease to amaze any outsider, or expat such as...
