    Lots of troubles afterwards

by globetrott Updated Mar 9, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    M/S Vistafjord in Svalbard

Favorite thing: Lots of troubles afterwards :
The captain lost his job as a captain , but was working in another department for the company lateron.

The passengers got back a lot of their money, as we had to go back directely to Hamburg for repairs and did not visit any other port than just Geiranger
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: The consequences for the crew ??
...2 extra days off in Hamburg, staying overnight...

As I said in the beginning - one of my best adventures onboard...

    Lets tear our M/S Vistafjord

Favorite thing: A long rope had to be used, so the ships were not too close to each other
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: Ships have to show certain security-papers in every port.
These papers expire in an accident like that one, and so we had been forced to return to Longyearbyen to make a security-check by marine-divers, examining the underwater-ship completely

    finally - the tug-boat

by globetrott Written Mar 9, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

the rescue tug-boat for M/S Vistafjord

Favorite thing: Finally the tug-boat came and it took 2 attempts to take us out
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: Don't ask me how much money that tug-boat finally was for our shipping company.
The ship itself, 3 men onboard, diesel for 8 hours one-way...

M/S Vistafjord on the rocks in Svalbard

Favorite thing: At least waiting for the tug-boat took place in this wonderful landscape
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: There were announcements of course, telling the people that a tug-boat was on the way to rescue us

    The size of the ropes

by globetrott Written Mar 9, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

M/S Vistafjord saved by tenders in Spitzbergen

Favorite thing: Strong ropes were necessary and nobody would believe these 4 small ships would be able to hold the large cruise-ship
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: these boats added a lot of fog and bad smell to the lovely landscape, running full-speed all the time

Time went by - and the ebb began

by globetrott Written Mar 9, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    M/S Vistafjord in Svalbard

Favorite thing: Slowly the ebb began, and the difference of the water-level is there about 1 meter
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: By the lower sea-level M/S Vistafjord drifted deeper into the sandbank and as these banks are never just flat, it was a danger the ship would bend to one side...

...therefore the tenders had to stabilize the ship for about 4 hours by tearing it full-speed towards one direction, otherwise it might have fallen to the other side...

M/S Vistafjord and the helicopter in Svalbard

Favorite thing: A New attraction on Lido-deck
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: The Sysselman informed the captain that a tug-ship is on the way, but will need a minimum of 8 hours to arrive

Helicopter onboard of Vistafjord in Kongsfjord

Favorite thing: The Sysselman is the representative of the norwegian Governement in Svalbard, he is police-officer, chancelor and lord major in one person
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: And so he came onboard, simply landing his own helicopter on the Lido-deck of our cruise-ship

by globetrott Written Mar 9, 2003

The Sysselman of Svalbard arriving by helicopter

Favorite thing: Well, finally the ship had to ask for help and sent a radio-message to Longyearbyen, Svalbard's capital
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: A ship needed 8 hours from Longyearbyen to get to our cruise-ship

    M/S Vistafjord - Save our ship - 1st try

Favorite thing: It was a first attempt to simply lower our tender-boats.
They look rather small on this pic but they each have a capacity of more than 100 passengers seated

And they have 2 really strong engines for high-speed tenderservice in small ports
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: ...BUT, M/S Vistafjord did not move at all

M/S Vistafjord in Kongsfjord / Svalbard

Favorite thing: What a great place to strand the ship, with plenty of great landscape around the ship...
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: I guess the captain was not so very happy, but for the crew and many passengers it was a wonderful adventure...

...and the adventure had just started, when we ran aground !

M/S Vistfjord stuck on a sandbank in Svalbard 1979

Favorite thing: The only waves were made by our ship, while cruising with minimum-speed into the fjord
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: and so the ship moved tenderly up and down and up .....

    ...BUT NOT DOWN ANYMORE !!!

Plenty of boats-men watching the water

by globetrott Written Mar 9, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

M/S Vistfajord in Kongsfjord / Svalbard

Favorite thing: Of these Fjords sea-charts are not available, as the cruise-ships normally go somewhere else
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: So some members of the nautical staff are watching out for any kind of danger like rocks or other things beeing visible from the very stem of the ship.
And they have a steady connection by walky-talky ( NO cellphones at that time in 1979 !! )

    Great ice-berg-formations

by globetrott Written Mar 9, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Iceberg in Svalbard / Spitzbergen

Favorite thing: Icebergs came in so many different formations
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Fondest memory: It looks like a rather small Iceberg, but first of all just 10% of its size is to be seen on top of the sea-level.

And besides THIS iceberg was about 10 meters wide above sea-level

On the next pic you will see M/S Vistafjord hitting this iceberg with its stem
