Bus ticketing NOK 40 by Saagar There is a scheduled bus service that takes care of your transport needs from/to the airport if you stay in the hotels and guesthouses in Longyearbyen. They are there on flight arrival and do not leave before the last passenger has left the terminal arrival hall. They deposit passengers in their respective hotels. The bus baggage rooms are marked with the different hotel names. On your departure they have scheduled routes well ahead of flight departures. Many people have special baggage check-ins, and the bus schedule does leave room for such extra activity. Check your hotel reception for the schedules. The fare between LYR and the hotels is a flat NOK 40. Leave a Comment Theme: BusPhone: Ask in the hotel receptionsOther Contact: Svalbard Busservice A/S

Outside the terminal by Saagar THE INFO POSTED HERE IS SOMEWHAT REDUNDANT, SINCE LYR HAS A NEW TERMINAL BUILDING WITH MUCH BETTER FACILITIES. SEE A NEW TIP ON THIS, WHILE I LEAVE THIS BASIC INFO AS MOST OF IT IS TRUE... LYR is a simple but rugged airport. They have frequent cancellations due to bad weather combined with a hefty landing approach route. Once there you will have plenty of time waiting for your baggage as big, burly polar-macho male Norwegians aged 40-55 crowd the baggage band instead of standing back of the yellow line giving everyone a view of the baggage that comes rolling in. The baggage handling on arrival is inadequate. While you wait, there is delivery of special baggage through a side door, and posters to read about the dangers of polar bears, and a nice, albeit stuffed one exhibited in a glass case. Check the people around you, your neighbour may be skiing to the North Pole tomorrow - many interesting types here. The airport staff are very adept at handling special baggage here - your expedition gear, kayak, sleds, skis, guns, rifles etc. are not unique here. The exit from the airport is equally simple and you will find the bus right there - or your pre-booked taxi. In the winter, walking into Longyearbyen from here (5 kms) is not an option due to polar bears and the cold. The Longyearbyen Camping site for avid tent dwellers is very close to the airport - walk there. Leave a Comment

Longyearbyen Airport by Saagar There are three or four main itinerarys you can use to reach Svalbard by air. 1) Most commonly from the Norwegian mainland directly from Oslo nonstop, or from Oslo via Tromsø, or from Tromsø itself. The combined airlines SAS/Braathens fly these routes. Norwegian tried to fly for a while, but apparently no longer. In case they do re-emerge on this route, they will probably be the low-cost alternative. 2) From Murmansk there are occasional flights by Aeroflot, but there is no set schedule. 3) From Moscow there are likewise flights once in a while. 4) From Kiev, ditto, by Polkovo. I assume th cheapest option will be from Murmansk, but the most regular scheduled flights will be from Norway. There are daily flights as you can check for yourself at WWW.sas.no If you can use Star Alliance bonus travel awards you are a lucky person (also if you can find a seat during the high season). You can also put together a package through one of the Longyearbyen based travel service agencies and thus get a cheaper ticket baked in. Leave a Comment

End of the line for SAS by Saagar Use you frequent flier points on Star Alliance SAS, Lufthansa, Thai, United etc.) to get there; Svalbard is treated as a Norwegian domestic destination (two hours off the mainland). This is the farthest destination you can fly by bonus points within the domestic or Nordic bonus points level system. I met a Dane once who flew from Copenhagen via Oslo to Longyearbyen, but were to return the next day, just for the heck of it - to see how far he could fly for free! But you have to book a long time ahead to ensure a seat using bonus points/mileage points - maybe as much as 6 months to be on the safe side... The company Lufttransport seems to be able to help. I have seen that they have Dorniers and helicopters based at LYR. Just ensure you have the right permits for where you want to go first... Office in Longyearbyen, open weekdays 8-16. Leave a Comment Theme: AirplanePhone: 79024770

There is a taxi service in Longyearbyen. Useful for taking you from one venue to the next, such as carry you back to the hotel from a night out at Huset. You can also prebook for your flight departure (or arrival) and take you out to the far corners of the road network, such as to mine No 7 and Bjørndalen for hiking or skiing. You can rent a car and travel around the 45 km of surface roads in and around Longyearbyen. Not surfaced, but surface. Underground there must be about 400 km of roads in the horizontal mine shafts. All the mountains around Longyearbyen are like Swiss cheeses. The roads are gravel roads, most of them, and not that many kilometres are open during winter time. You can rent a vehicle right on arrival at Longyear Airport. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor HomePhone: 91702258Website: www.autorent.as Other Contact: rinfo@autorent.as

NB! I AM MADE AWARE THAT THIS FOLLOWING INFO USED TO HOLD TRUE, BUT DEFINITELY NO LONGER. THE HURTIGRUTEN SHIP NO LONGER PLIES TROMSØ-LONGYEARBYEN, ONLY THE SVALBARD CRUISES OUT OF LONGYERBYEN. BUT LET'S HOPE THEY WILL RESUME....? DATE OF THIS INFO UPDATE: 15 AUG 05. As soon as the summer season begins at Svalbard an old, nostalgia issue Coastal Express Liner plies the stretch from Tromsø via the North Cape, Bear island to Longyearbyen and up to the magic 80 degrees north, ice permitting, at the north end of Svalbard. You can jump off at Longyearbyen, or board there, depending on avaiable capacity. You can do all sorts of packages with this ship, too, just the thing from Longyearbyen and to the north and back again, or fly up and ship down - whatever. Leave a Comment

There are daily flights to Svalbard from Oslo and Tromso, usually operated by Braathens with Boeing 737 and SAS with MD80. Flight time from Tromso is about 1 hour and 40 minutes, or three hours from Oslo (nonstop) or 4 hours and an half from Oslo via Tromso. The flight schedule non always connects easily with other international flights and sometimes an overnight in Oslo or Tromso may be required, especially on some days of the week. Leave a Comment

Another great coastal-cruiseline might be this one, that I store here for my personal use , and maybe it might be of some help for others as well. This is a cruise I will certainly make one day, as it offers to land at many places, where the big cruise-ships will have to pass by without landing. ! Leave a Comment
