OK, I have never been to this famous hard rock festival myself, but of course it has to be mentioned and I have friends and colleagues who go every year, coming from as far away as Germany. Several heavy metal superstars have been her throughout the years and all kinds of people who like the music come here - from those who stay in comfort with local families to those who camp in the mud. If the first is what you like, just check what the tourist office can offer. See the website below for information on the festival itself, which takes place in the village of Norje outside town.

The village of Hällevik is at the far end of the rural Listerlandet peninsula, and should definitely be visited if you are driving around the area. It is known for its smoked fish which you can find in the harbour, and for its fishing museum open summertime. Hällevik also has a small jazz festival in summer as well as a Premier League football team (Mjällby) and lots of lovely wooden houses. Its setting in the Hanö Bay means there is a decent enough beach too, and some great walking paths through seaside meadows.

Sölvesborg is on the Copenhagen/Malmö to Karlskrona line and therefore relatively well served by trains throughout the day. Should you come from Stockholm, you simply change trains in Hässleholm if you don't travel down the east coast but stay with the trains. The station is located by the sea, right in the town centre with just a few minutes walk to the town hall.

It's not that the privately owned island of Hanö is unknown, far from it since it has given its name to the entire bay in this region, but it is a bit hard to get to so it still has to be considered off the beaten path. There is a boat service all year round for the few people living out here on the rather flat and easily discovered island. The boat is their lifeline since there is not much service on the island, and if you grow up here you often have to leave for a while to attend school on the mainland rather than commute. Apart from carrying locals and goods, the boats of course carry tourists too and if you are many and travel in summer, you are advised to call in advance to make sure there is space on the boat. If you don't have a car, you can catch a bus from Sölvesborg to the fishing village of Nogersund (not that frequent so check in advance) from where the boat departs. The crossing then takes around 25 minutes.

Once on the island, you can appreciate the scenery and grazing deer, especially since there are no cars at all on it. Summertime, its guest harbour is lively and here you also when you then find the little supermarket and the restaurant open. If you want to stay the night there is a year-round open hostel but you need to pre-book if you want to stay out of season. Here you can also camp which you are not allowed to do in the football ground since that doubles as a helicopter landing pad :))) In 1810-12 the island was a base for the English Navy during the Napoleonic Wars and still has en English cemetary from this time. It also has a famous lighthouse much heard of in weather reports.
