    the giant goat in miniature

Favorite thing: The Goat is the maskot of Gävle. Its origin is a very funny story. In 1966 a local man had the idea of creating a giant Swedish Yule goat of straw. On December the first a 13-meter tall goat stood on the square. On New Year's Eve the goat was set on fire by a young man. He got arrested. In 1969 the same happend as well as in 1970. In the next two years the goat collapsed under its own weight. In the next years the goat was set on fire again, or collapsed or - and this was a rare event - it was left unmolested.

here you can read what happened in every single year so far

    MalacoLeaf Candy

by Nobbe Updated Jan 15, 2004
    MalacoLeaf

Favorite thing: MalacoLeaf is the largest producer of sugar confectionery in Scandinavia with a range of well known brands such as Läkerol, Malaco, Menthol, Ahlgrens Bilar and SorBits. Malaco and Leaf both have long traditions of producing high quality candy. Leaf (originally Ahlgrens) started producing Läkerol in 1909 and Malaco (originally Dansk Engelsk Lakridsfabrik) started producing Snøre in 1920.

Malaco and Leaf merged in summer 1999, when the international food group CSM (who bought Malaco in 1997) acquired Leaf from the Finish company Huhtamäki.

    A big, small town

    Gvle street

Favorite thing: My favourite thing so far about Gävle is that the town, albeit small, gives the impression of a big city. Gävle has got it goin' on, you might say!

The train station is right now the site of much reconstruction and remodelling, but if the plans I have seen are correct, it will be great when finished in fall of 2003. The station is the first thing most people see of Gävle, so, naturally, a modern, big and functional building is right to the point. It's what Gävle is all about.

The rest of the town continues in the same way. The avenues are wide, adorned with trees, the statues are numerous, as are the fountains. The river, Gavleån, that runs right through town, wide of course. (not talking Seine, but still...).

Walking around in Gävle is a great way to pass your time, especially if the weather is welcoming. There are constantly little sites to discover, and the air is mostly sea-fresh. (Exept when the wind is blowing from the direction where the paper-making factory of Skutskär lies. Then is STINKS.)

And of course, Gävle has it's own "Central Park", a huge green area centrally located called Boulognerskogen.
What else would you expect from this big, small town?
