Do you hate the crowds in the shopping centres when you are in hurry and you just want to buy a few things? In Gävle you don't have such problems. We were here on a weekday in the morning. We hardly saw someone in the pedestrian zone. We were the first at the cash register in a supermarket, in a mall and in a bakery. The city of my dreams - I hate to stand in line to pay.
City center covered in shops: GReat shopping – actually
I can compare with many other smaller Swedish towns, and Gävle has comparatively great shopping possibilities. The pedestrian street Drottninggatan runs from the train station all the way to the park Boulognerskogan. Along the street lie most of the shops in Gävle, but also in the quarters between Drottninggatan and Nygatan, and along Nygatan. There are also a number of shops on the south side of the river, in the neighbourhood called Södermalm.
At the central square is the mall Nian, and a bit further away along Nygatan is another mall called Flanör. All the big clothes chainstores in Sweden are represented, such as H&M, Lindex, KappAhl, Indiska and MQ. Liquor stores are at the central square and in Södermalm (although there are plans to close the one on Södemalm). In Nian there is a large food store.
