Rauk stones on land by El_Sueco On Gotland there are several places with an abondance of rauks, the stone whitness from an older time, when land was on a higher level. - Due to winds and water abrasion the stone has eroded away, but thanks to harder stone at the top, some parts has remained, the so called 'raukar' (sing. one 'rauk'). - Rauks can be found at sea as well as on land. On west-north side, there are some famous locations for rauks. Leave a Comment

Stenkyrka by El_Sueco There are many churches at Gotland. They are built of stone, they are very old and inside there are often lime mural paintings of high quality. Inside the wall of Visby there are more than 35 churches. Also around the island there are many churches worthy your visit. See also my 'Gotlands län page' Leave a Comment

Fridhem waffle break by Sjalen At famous Fridhem south of Visby, there is a little cafe down by the beach which is famous for its Swedish waffles. We didn't think them that extraordinary compared to all other Swedish waffles but still, they are delicious by definition :) The best thing about this place though, is its position right by the sea, along a pebbly beach full of fossils, and with the most amazing view of Högklint just south of you. This is where you get the best photos of the cliff. It is also an incredibly convenient stop on a bikeride, before or after tackling the walk or bikeride up the cliff (depending on which way you negotiate your way up), or a way to reward yourself for excersising that day :)
The view from the white beach at Fridhem with its almost Thai coulour contrasts with white limestone and green sea...all with Högklint looming in the distance. A fantastic place (see the Gotland intro page). Leave a Comment

Beach at night Fårö by Izak Gotland is quiet, and you can take it easy, camping is my favourite accomodation during (dry) summers.
Some rocky, some sandy beaches. Leave a Comment

The landscape in the summer! by jacob_m It's actually not a coincident I've called this page Gotland - the island of roses and ruins. The flowers in Gotland are present everywhere. Old churches and ruins too, it's a fact that this island has amazingly 50 churches. Leave a Comment

by Sjalen A great place which I could also have put under "restaurants" but prefer to put here for the reason that you stop here when you see the lovely setting rather than the menu and it is a great break on a cycle trip along the northern coast from Visby. The cafe consists of a hole in the wall in the farm outhouse, and here you have sandwiches and cakes, local saffron pancake, coffees, lemonade and ice cream. Perfect when you need to boost your system after som biking. The only thing disturbing the peace in the green garden is children playing and since the garden is big, they can do so without being a nuisance, whilst you relax in the sun. There are some parrots and sheep on the farm, and far away you can make out the sea behind the coastal meadows. This really is the sort of place I wish I lived in. At least summertime. Head for Själsö and drive on past its harbour. Leave a Comment

Typical rocks of FARO, a little island by Gotland by PALLINA, 1 more photos Gotland is amazingly nice, especially if it is sunny. It's capital town, Visby, was an hanseatic Town and is extremely rich of churches. Actually, Gotland has the highest concentration of churches of all Scandinavia, due to its flourishing past as hanseatic town. Most of them are simply ruins but, nevertheless, very nice. Gotland is a very common holiday place for both Swedish and Polnish; avoid the Medioeval Festival like the pest, because it will be impossibile to find a place where to overnight. We went there on Aug. 16 and it was crowdy but not so much, because schools begin on 20th Aug (more or less) so the season was almost off. On the other hand, June and July are the best months to visit Sweden: less probability to get showers and more more light. Do not miss the little island FARO (unpronunciable) but avoid to overnight there: there is only one ferry connecting FARO to Gotland in about 5-10minutes, leaving every 30 minutes but sometimes there is a long "snake" of cars waiting so you can wait also an hour before getting a place on the ferry.
We met a chorus singing in the ruins of a medioeval church in Visby....it was really breathtaking Leave a Comment
