With the Destination Gotland ferry you can get to Gotland from Nynäshamn (near Stockholm) and Oskarshamn. The trip takes about 3 hours.

The time table is depending on the season, check their website for the best information.

There are a lot of different ticket prices, with costs from 40 SEK to about 500 SEK depending on the service and discount.

On the boat you can also bring the car, MC or bike.

The island Fårö is located north of Gotland. The best way to get there is by the car ferry leaving from Fårösund.

Daytime the ferry leaves every 30 minute. Check the website for more information.

Silja Opera-the best way to get from Tallinn to Visby . From mid June until mid August the Silja Opera will take you to Visby! it takes about 13 hours, but dont worry the ferry has a very nice sun deck with a swimming pool and many bars!

The way most people get here is by ferry since then they can bring their car, caravan and so on along on holiday, or all sorts of things should they be locals shopping in mainland Sweden. Gotlanders have a discount on the ferry since they don't have much of a choice if they want to bring their vehicles but the rest of us pay a bit more. The cheapest tickets do not include a seat reservation so there is a bit of a scrum to reach seats in the restaurant area for the 3 hour crossing but this is usually not that much of a problem - should you want to eat, people are used to sharing tables and many also bring their food to their reserved seats. The reserved seats are what I recommend and a popular thing is to book seats in the front lounge where you can see Gotland suddenly appearing at the horizon. The seats are really comfy, a bit like on planes, and if you bring earphones you can listen to the film sometimes shown on board. Otherwise, the information desk will rent you DVD players and Nintendo games to fill up your time. You can also spend it on the sun deck with a beer if the weather is pleasant enough. The ferries go to Visby and leave from either Nynäshamn (an hour south of Stockholm by commuter train) or Oskarshamn further south. Summertime there are also ferries from Grankullavik on the neighbouring island of Öland these days again. The ferry company site below also offer accommodation packages.

Gotland is perfect for going on bicycle, it's flat and there are many small roads and not too much traffic.

  • The most popular way to see Gotland is to go around by bike. Bring your own bike (easy if you come to Gotland by boat) and stay in a tent or in campingplaces. It's normally also possible to hire a bike after your arrival.
There are also some nice hostels and private owned hotels around the island.

  • There are ferries to Gotland from the mainland. If you're travelling from Stockholm there are ferries from Nynäshamn (1 hour south of Stockholm) to Visby, the journey takes 5-6 hours. There is one daily departure all year around and in the summer at least two daily departures and also a fast hovercraft.
There is also another connection to the city of Oskarshamn in southern Sweden, also one daily departure and some extra departures in the summer. Some of the mainbuses leave from the ferry terminal which make the ferry a good alternative even if Visby is not the final destination.

  • Visby airport - Gotland
    Visby airport
    by jacob_m
There are flights leaving from both Arlanda and Bromma airports in Stockholm to Visby as well as from Norrköping. The flights are operated by Skyways and the flighttime from Stockholm to Visby is about 30 mins. If you're travelling to Gotland from a foreign country you normally go to Stockholm (Arlanda airport) where you change to a flight to Visby (the flights are leaving from terminal 3). There are no buses from Visby airport to the city so you have to take a taxi, the short trip (4 km) to the city center costs SEK 70-100, the taxicompanies normally have fixed prices between the airport and the city.
There are some car rental-companies at the airport too.
