Kneippbyn Things to Do

Hög(e)klint is a cliff and nature reserve a couple of kilometres south of Kneippbyn which has great views back towards Visby as well as southwards from its top. I however enjoy it just as much from below - it's best seen from the beach at Fridhem where you can have a coffee before or after your photo session (see tip) and enjoy some calories if you've walked up to Högklint along the seaside footpath rather than taken the car up most of it. You can see more images in the travelogue below. I have never been to Thailand but it still conjures up images of it in my mind, with the limestone giving the sea a very green colour.

As car museums go, this is quite a small one but it is still a fun mix of models and also include a row of tractors, including Sweden's oldest. Record breaking things like that seems to be the owner's thing as he also claims to have the World's oldest bicycle in his possession (second pic) in the bike hall which has cycles and motorbikes. Apart from these, there is a room full of old automated games and you can also have a go yourself at riding a pennyfarthing. Children can race at the go cart track or pay through the nose for five minutes at the radio boats in the pond.

The "summer land" is the amusement park part of it all, and also where you find Pippi's house Villa Villerkulla. You pay the entrance fee and then the rides are free. There are no real white knuckle rides so teenagers will be disappointed but can still have a go at gokart which exists as "Indy" for them and normal cars for the younger children. The park is ideal for 5-10 year-olds as there is a small log flume ride, a junior rollercoaster and various climbing frames and mini bumper cars as well as (small) rowing boats. There is also a stage where Swedish bands such as the Ark and others sometimes perform or a show is put up (separate evening tickets).

This restaurant is open mostly during the summer season when all the tourists visit Gotland and also Kneipbyn. They have lunchtime between 11.30-14.30 and then a special menu for the evening. During many evenings during the summer they have music or something else as entertainment.

At famous Fridhem (see accommodation), there is a little cafe down by the beach which is famous for its Swedish waffles. We didn't think them that extraordinary compared to all other Swedish waffles but still, they are delicious by definition :) The best thing about this place though, is its position right by the sea, along a pebbly beach full of fossils, and with the most amazing view of Högeklint just south of you. This is where you get the best photos of the cliff. It is also an incredibly convenient stop on a bikeride, before or after tackling the walk or bikeride up the cliff (depending on which way you negotiate your way up), or a way to reward yourself for excersising that day :)

    Favorite Dish: Waffles.
