    Danish-Swedish

Outside the modern town hall there is a sculpture of the meeting between the Danish king Christian IV and the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf. They met in Halmstad in 1619 when Sweden was paying off a debt to Denmark. Apparently the partied as befitted royalty but relations must still have been frosty underneath and of course the wars raged on for years to come. The sculpture is from 1952 by Edwin Öhrström.

Don´t tip more than 10% at the restaurants.

Remember that most of the people in Sweden can understand English. A lot of Swedes also understand French, German and Spanish.

Most of the swedes don´t drink alcohol at lunch. You are not allowed to order alcohol if you are under 21.

You can´t by alcohol in the supermarkets or shops. You have to go to a special supermarket called 'Systembolaget'. I Halmstad there is one 'Systembolaget' in the City. Avoid shopping at the 'Systembolaget' on Friday afternoon.

    91:an

by Sjalen Updated Jul 8, 2007

Halmstad is a garrison town and has a history of army presence (there is even an army museum at the barracks north of the city centre but I have not been there myself). This is why in 1932, Rudolf Petersson founded the cartoon about recruit number 91 Karlsson, better known just as 91:an all over Sweden. He based the cartoon on people he had met during his army time in Halmstad and it is thought that 91:an's lady friend is modelled on his own sister. The character always ends up doing stupid things and getting into trouble. Interestingly enough, 91:an still has an old 1950s uniform these days. Fans can flock to the 91:an statue in the middle of Storgatan.

Bring some food, drinks and mybe your Nargile? Go to the Picasso park located along the Nissan river. This is the place where students and other people hang around during the summer and warmer days.
