Jamtli - living history

by Maline

Jamtli is an open-air museum in the tradition of Stockholm museum Skansen. There is both an indoor and an outdoor area with lots of stuff on disply. Inside, the main attractions are old textiles and other viking remnanats. Outside, the more recent history of the county with old industry and old ways of life are reenacted. The museum has a great homepage on www.jamtli.combut unfortunately it is all in Swedish.Entrance fee is between 60 and 90 kronor (6-9€ approx.) depending on season. There is also a hostel, but I haven't visited it, however, if you want info call the number below, they know both about the hostel and the museum itself. Telephone hours between 9 and 4 weekdays.+46 63-15 01 00I can definitely recommend a visit to the museum though, especially with children, it is very kid-friendly with interactive activities.

Skiing in unspoiled nature.

by Maline

In the winter go skiing in the unspoiled nature!! You can get a ride with a scooter up the mountain and then it is up to you to get down again. There are marked tracks so you won't get lost, even if it can feel as though you are the last living creature on earth. The picture actually shows my parents setting off into the white landscapes on a sunny February day.. :-)Skiing like this is not hard even if you haven't done it much before. But I guess you shouldn't opt for the most remote tracks if you are a beginner.*Important* for safety - when you go out into the mountains make sure someone knows where you are. Tell friends or the place where you rent skis or the reception at your hotel etc. If there is a surprise blizzard and you get stuck out there, they can more easily find you that way!!

Rent a cottage!

by Maline

Rent a cottage in one of the villages, like Fjällkällan, Vemdalen etc. Good lodging both summer and winter. Here is where I use to stay. These houses are often fully equipped, lots of bed places, sauna and fire-place!Highly recommended!!

Go on a wildlife safari

by Maline

Ask the tourist office about details. The wildlife can be spectacular. You may see moose, reindeer, beavers, musk oxes etc.At least you will experience some magnificent scenery! In the pic you see a musk ox, and the counties of Härjedalen and Jämtland is the only place in Sweden that still hosts wild hords of these animals.
