Not so much Åre village itself, but the surrounding villages of Vålådalen, Storlien and others have great fell walking trails. You can walk for just a few kilometres up a fell or for days between fell cabins with your own tent. The choice is yours. A comment from me as a parent: children usually love this as they are completely free to roam and...more
Just outside the little town of Sveg there is this great skiing "centre" with white snow, steep hills for more advanced skiiers, easy slopes for children and NO QUEUING! Compared to the ski resorts of Vemdalen and Åre in Jämtland/Härjedalen, Sweden, the prices are fantastic! It is so cheap!
Go fishing for the day, rent a snowmobile, try Curling. Several of the winners of the ladies' world cup were born there - the winner of the ladies' biathlon lives nearby.
Equipment: To get to the slopes - rent a car. It is nearby, but bus service may not be that good.

An ice age "door" into the valley with a scenery that makes you think you are in Lapland and not Jämtland the way the fells look almost "square" instead of rolling. Of course we couldn't walk the 10 kilometres there on this trip but I really hope to come back as what I saw of it at the "Naturum" exhibition intrigued me. Here is a view from nearby...more
Bus from Undersåker (along the E14 where the turnoff is) leaves just after 8.00 in the morning as the night train from Stockholm has arrived, and the bus then trundles the 27 km to Vålådalen. Expect some nice views of Åreskutan and other fells along the way. It returns at 14.00 or thereabouts (depending on school holidays) and anything later needs...more
