I travelled from Linköping to Jönköping by train. It took me about 3 hours to get there, because I had two transfers (one at Tranås and then another at Nässjö), but only 2 hours to get back (only one transfer at Nässjö). The trains were efficient and on time. They were clean and tickets were checked on each one. I really like to travel by train, I think it is a great way to see a country and I had a very nice journey to and from Jönköping. A return second class ticket from Linköping to Jönköping will cost you about 460 SEK, but check the website below, as different fairs occur as to whether you are travelling on a regional train or the X2000 (high speed train). Rådhuset by sunset_gal This old building dates back to 1860 where it was first used as a school. However, as the school expanded with their intake, they built a new building near it and moved. The building was then taken over by the Municipality of Jönköping in the 1920s. It is a very old building but the interior is still very well-maintained. With high ceilings, no two rooms are the same. The municipality holds a meeting there every fortnight. Kung Carl Gustav XVI and Drottning Silvia have visited :) You can also relax and take a walk in the big park just in front of it. It is also near Lake Vattern and Munksjön. Jönköping is situated at the southern point of Lake Vättern, and the paths around the lake are a great place to go for a walk. From the train station I walked on the west side of the lake on the path there - going past a small stretch of 'beach', through lovely areas (like where the bridge is in the second photo) and into where there was housing with great views over the lake and of the city. There were a few other people out walking even though it was fairly cool. It makes for a nice walk and there are one or two small hills to go up or down, but don't worry there are also a few seats along the way if you feel the need to sit down, or just to enjoy your surroundings! by Tulin Once upon a time... ...when giants lived and ruled in Sweden, there was a giant called Vist who lived with his wife on the east side of Lake Vättern. One day they went to a family gathering on the other side of the lake. It was a jolly and exhilarating party with a lot of delicious food. When the giant Vist and his wife finally headed home Mrs Vist had gained so much weight that she doubted that she would be able to get across the lake in a single bound. Therefore, her considerate husband threw a turf of grass out into the lake so she could make it home without getting wet. And it's still there, the little flattened turf: Visingsö. This is one of the many legends told about this beautiful island which has been inhabited for thousands of years. It is likely that the Stone Age people came here as soon as the ice melted away and the land started to rise from the water nearly 8000 years ago. Probably the island soon after became an important place for the people and has remained so during the years. The large prehistoric burial grounds are testament that the population was quite prominent in previous times. Most of the approximately eight hundred graves are from the the Viking Era (about 800-1050 AD). Leave a Comment Address: VisingsjöOther Contact: The Brahe Family resided in the

by Nobbe North of Jönköping you will find the small and beautiful village of Gränna. From Gränna you can also take the ferry to the beautiful island of Visingsö and hire a cycle and explore the island. Gränna and Visingsö are a combination which no tourist should miss. And set aside at least a day for the trip if you want to see and take in everything here. Gränna is famous for all the polkagris shops, some of which actually show how polkagrisar are made. In Gränna you'll also find the Andrée Museum, where Engineer Andrée's expedition to the North Pole in a hot-air balloon, his hardships and his failure, are well documented. by sharkie Go and see Gota Kanal. It's the longest canal in Sweden and is where beautifully located. It streches from west to east of Sweden. In the early days the boats was sometimes draged by horses. Nowadays these roads that the horses walked on is very good bicycle roads if you want to enjoy Gota Kanal from an other perspective than from a boat.
