    Stenbrohult Church

This is the church were Linnaeus' father was the vicar. Sadly, Bishop Tegnér in the 19th century played havoc with church architecture all over the province of Småland so the church has a different look today when it is yet another "Tegnér barn" from 1830. That is not to say it is not nice (I was christened in it!) as it has a very rural and tranquil feel to it and its interior is light and airy whilst the cellars are from the old medieval church. The setting by Lake Möckeln is also nice and there is a bench for contemplation in the church yard (see fourth picture) which is a very peaceful place, but then again the whole area is declared an Ecclestiastical Nature reserve. If you stroll around the church yard a bit more, you will also see the Linneaus' family gravestone near the church (fifth picture). There are frequent concerts of all sorts here. The best time to visit it is really early in the morning on Christmas Day, although a sunny summer day is nice too.

    Möckelsnäs Orangery

To celebrate the 300th anniversary of Linnaeus, an orangery has been built at Möckelsnäs Mansion (see accommodation tip) where he spent some time in his childhood. It is built in 18th century style and in season has an impressive collection of flowers and plants for being in the middle of Småland :))) I think it is their intention that you should soon be able to buy seeds and so on there too as they are sponsored by a major national seed company from the region.

    Church stables

by Sjalen Updated Dec 2, 2006

In the Swedish countryside in the old days you might travel for a long time to get to church and many families therefore came with horse and carriage instead of just shank's pony. Therefore the churches provided stabling during the service and overnight for those who couldn't return due to snowstorms and what have you. Stenbrohult has some of the best kept church stables you can find in southern Sweden. See the third picture for a close up.

Linnaeus (Carl von Linné) Birth house

by Sjalen Updated Dec 2, 2006

The tiny cottage where the famous world botanist (the "Flower king" who classified all our flowers and gave them latin names) was born. Apart from the house itself you can see a herb garden inspired by what Linnaeus would have had, and stroll around the fantastic meadows behind. There is also a café in summer and several cultural activities such as haymaking and music evenings.
