Road expansion going on.....

It is not that difficult to reach Växjö the Kingdom of Glass in Småaland. Växjö has an airport with frequent Ryanair connections to Weeze, Germany. Kalmar would be the next nearest airport with other connections. According to the website of Kalmar airport it serves London, Frankfurt (am Main), Rome, Oslo, Paris, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Prague and many more. The distance between Kalmar and Växjö is approx. 100 km, and less to the individual glass factory villages. The Kingdom of Crystal’s website also lists the several approaches on their “How to fins us” menu. They write that the train stations are in Nybro, Lessebo, Emmaboda and Hovmantorp. They also give a list of local bus services, where the ones for Kronobergs Län is the most extensive. It has a map and a price list available. Even though it is Swedish only, it is easy to see that the prices vary depending on the regiopns you want to travel to.

I came by car, driving was the usual Swedish pleasure (as opposed to driving in Germany where the brain sick tailgaters and racing idiots poison any road). One warning though: road 25 between Eriksmala and Nybro is currently being expanded. In August 2009 a stretch of approx. 10 km directly east of Eriksmala was with reduced speed and passing forbidden. Given the scale of this expansion, it will take a while until it is finished. If I read the signs correctly, it will last until minimum October 2010. But it was fascinating to watch the excavated part next to the road – huge stones and water at the bottom. It gave a good idea of how difficult it must be to build streets in Sweden with all the rocky underground.

Update, March 2010:
Through a travel forum discussion we realised that Ryanair most probably has removed Växjö from their destination list. Weeze, the airport near Düsseldorf, is also gone from Ryanairs list.
So better always check Ryanair destinations. Maybe they will add Växjö again. Maybe not. It is Ryanair, so they are unpredictable.....

Not much is more relaxing than to spend a day on board the s/s Thor, which sets out from Kronoberg Castle to tour the Lake Helgasjon. Sometimes it makes whole daytrips up to Lake Asasjon, through a whole system of lake streams and that then includes lunch at Asa mansion. A great day out. See other tips for more pictures of this small, old gem of a ship.

Vxj Airport

Växjö Airport links the town and area with regular daily flights to Stockholm and Copenhagen.

It's a typical Swedish regional airport with a small cafe for passengers. Taxis, buses and car hire are all available there.

Where the roads meet

Yes they do meet here but transportation could be better. This is because the E4 motorway goes through nearby Ljungby and misses Växjö so all cheap coachliners stop in Ljungby instead. Nevertheless, you can get to Växjö from there by local bus although you need to check the timetables so you don't have to wait if it's a Sunday...Otherwise, catch regional bus 123 from Älmhult along the Malmö-Stockholm railway line.
If you're on a normal budget, catch a train in which case your options are better. Commuter style trains between Kalmar and Malmö/Copenhagen actually stop in town so it is a lot better these days that it used to be. Only ten minutes away by train and a little bit longer by local bus is also the southern railway hub of Alvesta where you find the trains to for instance Stockholm and there are some daily trains to Göteborg. Finally, there IS an airport with flights to Copenhagen which might have a good deal if you get a connection ticket from wherever you start.
