Excellent bus station - I arrived in minus degrees for the annual Jokkmokk Sami Festival from the bus I caught from Murjek which is about an hour by bus from the closest train station. Id caught the overnight train up from Stockholm and the connections all went smoothly and Id enjoy the sunrise just prior to arriving at Murjek and therefore the scenery in daylight with loads of road and countryside snow to see along the way.

The bus station as I reckon, is excellent - its clean and warm!, has excellent bathroom facilities to freshen up and an area that the staff there were adamant was ,though not official, lockup baggage faciilites, a safe place to keep luggage for the day. The staff on hand had a little information office with maps and information about the area (not intended to supersede or outdo the main Tourist Office in town though)

So a good start for my visit to the ARctic Circle for the festival!

Getting to Jokkmokk is relatively easy compared to where it is and to how difficult it is to get to other inland villages up here. The "Inlandsbussen" bus stop here a couple of times a day on its way between Östersund way down in mid-Sweden (but still hours north of Stockholm) and Gällivare only 95 kilometres north. You can also catch a train from Stockholm or Narvik/Kiruna to tiny Murjek in the middle of nowhere, where you then change to the local bus which usually matches the main line trains when they come thundering in.

Summertime, you can also try the famous Inlandsbanan railway which runs from Mora in the south of Sweden, all the way to Gällivare. This used to be an ordinary railway line but now sadly only runs as a tourist line.

Everywhere you go in Jokkmokk, snowmobiles are parked in the streets in winter and you will hear them if you go for a walk around the lake. You too can go for a ride in one if you contact the tourist information office for an updated list of companies.
