When more and more miners arrived here during the boom, it became hard finding somewhere to live for all of them. That is why Kåkstaden was built. A "kåk" is Swedish slang for a house today but originally means shanty type housing and that is what you find here. What you see today is a replica town after all the harsh weather and mining expansions up here, but it is built up in the same way as the original one. In summer, there are activities here such as reenactments and markets in the little colonial shops and this is when it is lively. In winter, there is nothing special going on for most of the time, but the spooky feeling on a wintry afternoon is marvellous - look at my intro page...

This is what makes people come here and you can go down the mine summertime as a group visitor. If you want to visit the mine off season, you have to pay extra for a private visit, which costs SEK 2000 even if it is only you. There is also a mining museum attached to this, where you can learn a lot about both history and techniques.

Malmberget is easy to get to from Gällivare as there are three bus lines from Gällivare train and bus stations, taking various routes up the hill.
