Norrköping Things to Do

Holmens Bruk was founded in the beginning of the 17th century by Louis De Geer. The history of the company and the processes used in the making of paper is shown at the Holmen museum. The museum has a group of 25 veterans, all have worked in the Holmen Paper Factory in Norrköping.

This is Sweden’s largest fire station museum offering a broad exhibition over the workings of a fire station over the past 150 years. There is a display of carts, wagons, vehicles, pumps and other fire-fighting equipment.

The Rock carving museum. Norrköping has many 3000 year old carvings. This is a meeting place for all those interested in prehistoric times. Exhibitions, café, and gift shop. Bronze-age gatherings, special exhibitions, rock-carving trips and boat paddling are all available to the public.

The famous Hällrinstningarna - rock carvings - at Himmelstalund are located on a couple of gently sloping hills in the middle of a park and leisure area.

There was once an old farming community located here. There are 57 stones and about 1650 figures carved onto these surfaces. They are one of two large rock carving collections found in the country.

These carvings show a rich variety of motives. The most common is that of the ship, there are 650 of these, after that come the animal figures, and the elf stones, around 260 each of these motives. The most prominent is the figure of a man, footprints, different weapons and sun symbols. Unique for the area is the number of large paw figures of unknown meaning, and also a road with 25 paw marks from a bear.

The first time this cactus display was shown was in the beginning of the 1900. The arrangement was very much appreciated, so much so, that a couple of years later it become an annual display. Approximately 25 000 cactuses are planted at the beginning of June every year. The display itself is changed from year to year, depicting a theme which is of particular interest for that particular year. No two years are ever the same.

On Kvarnholmen (the island of Kvarnholmen) lies Norrköpings newest cultural institution - Louis De Geer Concert and Congress Hall. This was in fact Holmens Paper mill and since 1994 has been transformed into a remarkable concert hall. Many people come to the hall to meet, discuss and debate for today as well as for tomorrow. This is also the home of Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. An inspiring and exciting place to visit.

During the Augustfest (Agustifesten) the traditional Swedish championship in fireworks takes place annually in Norrköping over the river. Contenders are the fireworks manufacurers.

The competion takes place 22.00 next to Grand Hotel.

In the beginning of august the Augustfest (previously Norrköping's Carneval) takes place with a childrens carneval, National Championship in Fireworks, fair, lots of music performances and a travelling amusement park.
