Skanör

by ant1606

At the time of my former visits to Sweden, both times from Denmark, the Øresund was to be crossed by ferry. A spectacular bridge is now making things much easier, accessible by motor vehicles running on the top level. The lower level is dedicated to commuting train convoys connecting Copenhagen and Malmö urban areas. Boarding such train with our bicycles could have been a better experience if only the train wasn't crowded, but a 40-minute ride in these conditions is probably a better option than a ferry crossing.Riding past the southern outskirts of Malmö revealed the quiet south-western Swedish countryside all the way to the town of Skanör. We stayed at our friends' home on this rainy day, it's otherwise a great relaxed beach location.Address: The Skanör-Falsterbo peninsula is the southwesternmost point in Sweden

Lost in Sweden!

by loiseklund

My neice, my aunt and I visited Sweden 6 years ago and it was the experience of my life. It was like going back in time about 100 years. People were so friendly, polite and everything was so clean. We went for a drive out of Karlstad and ended up on a very untraveled road. We saw an old wagon with wooden wheels. Finally found our way out but for a few moments we were part of the history of Sweden. My grandparents emigrated from Varmland in the late 1800's. My Dad's side of the family, the Eklunds supposedly have a family plot in Oresbro. We could not find it when we were there, but stopped and had coffee at the castle there. We spent quite a bit of time in Varmland looking for gravestones of family memebers, the groundskeepers deserve a pat on their back for such beautiful cemeteries. Your website is like being in Sweden again, and I thank you very much for making it for us to enjoy.

Skokloster

by sim1

Skokloster is one of the most popular castles in Sweden, with a huge collections of painting, furniture and arms. The arms collection is one of the largest in Europe. Skokloster is also one of the best preserved seventeenth-century castles in Europe. So I didn't need any convincing, I really wanted to see this castle! It sounded perfect, but all in all I was a bit disappointed about my visit to Skokloster. The rooms were very dark as they didn't want to expose the interiors to too much light. That is something that I do understand, but it is a bit disappointing not being really able to see much. I also had a bit of bad luck with the guided tour. We took a guided tour in English, but our guide was probably very nervous and had this crazy giggle. She just kept on giggling, giggling and giggling. Every sentence ended with.....hihi hihi hihi hihi :-) After the tour all we remembered was this...

Sweden's "Stonehenge": Ale Stenar (Ale Stones)

by tejanasueca

Ales Stenar (Ale Stones), the mysterious "ship-setting" made of 59 large boulders set in a layout of a ship, 67 meter in length, 19 meter in breadth. This monumental stone formation is located just outside a fishing village of K?seberga, approximately eighteen kilometres southeast of Ystad in Sk?ne, on an astoundingly flat, grassy headland that overlooks the narrow, pebbly beach of the Baltic Sea. The view from the Ales Stenar offers an open 180 degree sea horizon and simultaneously an open 180 degree land horizon. There are several legends regarding the origin of this monument; however, most people believed that it was raised in the Viking Period, or perhaps a little bit earlier. However, older findings in the area eludes to that the place was used, maybe as a cult place or burial ground, even before the stones were raised. Some argue that the stones were raised because old Viking Kings...

Strömsholm

by sim1

In these 'off the beaten path tips' I want to make an overview of all the castles and palaces that I've visited in Sweden. In this picture you can see Strömsholm. Hmmm.... maybe not the best one to start this page with, because I only had a chance to look at the castle from the outside. But it looked great and I hope to visit the palace in the near future!Strömholm is located on the largest of three islands in the Kolbäckså river delta at Lake Mälaren. This is about 20 km to the southwest of Västerås. The area of Strömsholm is well known for its horses and that has been so for a very long time. The start of Strömsholm castle has actually everything to do with horses: King Gustav Vasa ran a stud-farm on the property during the 1500's and in 1560 the first permanent house was build on this location. The current castle was built between 1669 and 1681 for Queen Hedvig Eleonare. Strömsholm...

Nice Day Trip from Stockholm or Göteborg

by Over60

I spent a nice day of hiking at this national park, located about half way from Stockholm to Göteborg. Although access by car would be easier, the place is easily reached by a combination of train and bus, with a change from the former to the latter at Gnosjo. Bring a book though; the connections are not perfectly timed. There are also several attractive restaurants near the train station. The park itself is large and well maintained, with a nice information center with signage in both English and Swedish. I chose the longest trail, which makes a wide circle around the lake in the center of the park and requires about 2.5 hours to walk. Much of the trail is along simple boardwalks through marshland and bogs. It's an interesting and attractive landscape, and even at the time of my midsummer visit, the trail was anything but crowded.

LOPPIS'es - second hand shops, all over SWEDEN.

by Petruta

No matter if you are in a bigger city or just going through villages, when you travel around Sweden with your car, you'll see millions (i'm exagerating here :)) of signs directing you from the road to the closest loppis. Many times there are just old things some people, families dont need (in bigger shops each owner can sell his own stuff, still, everything is well organized). But, i usually saw many nice things, jewelry and valuable antiquities.Try it and you will see the charm of special places, typical swedish (i think!).

Visingsö, a small island in the Lake Vätter. There you can ride a horse or even in a carriage. The 800yr old Kumlaby Church (photo) is worth to visit. There is also a campground and some clean beaches. Unfortunatey, it was too cold for bathing when we were there in August 2000.Transfer by ferry including retour costs 40 SEK/person.
