    Salmon on the bbq
    by sim1

Let's continue with some seafood, because you can find this item very often on the menu list: Salmon! Or 'Lax' in Swedish. In the picture you can see salmon being grilled on the barbeque, but this is not the only way Swedes love to eat their salmon.

    Other popular salmon dishes are:
Gravad Lax: This salmon is pickled with sugar, dill and salt. Don't get scared away by that description though, the pickling is very subtle leaving the salmon tasting delicious.
Rökt Lax: this is smoked salmon, also served in thin slices. You can even buy two varieties of this one, kaltrökt (cold smoked salmon) and warmrökt (warm smoked salmon) and both do taste delicious.

  • Semla - Sweden
    Semla
    by sim1

Semla! This is a Swedish Easter cake, which should be eaten on the Tuesday four weeks before Easter. But it tastes so good that everybody is more than happy to break this rule and eat in more than once. So the semla is no longer restricted to only Tuesdays but any day of the week goes these days! And the time that you can buy them is much longer too, starting from January to well into March. Why? Well that's easy, hahaha, they are delicious!!! :-))

Semla is a big wheat bun filled with whipped cream. And in the middle you will find a surprising filling of marzipan. In the bun itself should be some cardamom to make it a real semla. And the whole combination just makes it delicious!

    Crayfish
    by sim1

Crayfish is a big thing in Sweden, but only during part of the year. But when it is the August, 'season of the crayfish', you can't seem to escape them. Everyone has one or more crayfish parties (kräftskiva) and they are quite fun. The crayfish are served in their shell, and eating them requires a lot of work, singing and of course, drinking snaps!

When I first came to Sweden I read this book about Swedish traditions, and of course they mentioned the crayfish parties. It described in full detail how you should eat them and how the parties were like. After reading that I decided one thing: those crayfish parties were not for me! Hahaha, but now I do have changed my mind :-)) The crayfish does taste great, to my very surprise. I can hardly wait until next year's crayfish season :-)

    spettekaka
    by sim1

Have you ever seen spettekaka before? Well, I hadn't, hahaha, so I was fascinated by it. Spettekaka is a traditional Skåne sweet cake. Spettekaka is a meringue-like cake, created by drizzling the batter (dozens of beaten eggs, sugar and a bit of potato flour) slowly over a cone-shaped spit rotating over a slow fire. This forms many lacy layers.

Spettekaka is not a tiny cake, hahaha, these spettekaka's can be really big! I saw this spettekaka on a christmas market and of course I had to make a picture of it for VT. The lady behind the counter looked at me and I was afraid she would ask me not to take photos. But nothing was further from the truth. The lady smiled and offered me a bit of spettekaka to taste instead, mmmmm, I have to say it tasted yummie!!! But it also shows the friendliness of the people, something that keeps surprising me everywhere I go in Sweden. Hahaha, I guess this is one of the reasons that I love this country so much :-)

Tant Brun (Auntie Brown) Café is located at Laurentii Gränd just within a stone's throw from the Tourist Information Office at Old Town in Sigtuna. Consider taking a coffee/tea break at this excellent early 17th century environment café when you are having a vacation in Sigtuna. The coffeehouse is popular for its home-made pies. You can choose between apple, raspberry and blueberry pies. All pies are excellent and delicious, it has to be said! Prices are 33.00 SEK per piece. Tea/coffee in copper pot costs 25.00 SEK per person. Waitresses are dressed in brown traditional costumes. Opening hours are between 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. daily.

Raspberry and blueberry pies are highly recommended.

  • Having lunch - Sweden
    Having lunch
    by sim1

Okay, now it is time for a real restaurant tip! Here is an example of a typical lunch in Sweden. The restaurant I went to on this occasion was restaurant Pråmen in Västerås. The location of this particular restaurant is a bit different. Restaurant Pråmen used to be a cargo boat that transported sand, but the boat is now moored to the edge of Lake Mälaren and in use as a restaurant.

The food in the restaurant is good. I had salmon with potatoes in a creamy sauce with salad. The whole dish costs around 60 to 70 Swedish Krona. I don't know the exact price anymore, but this is the average price for a daily lunch dish in Sweden.

Most restaurants have one or two daily dishes that go around this price. You can order a la carte as well of course, but this is mostly more expensive. There is a huge difference in prices between lunch and dinner! Swedes go very often to a restaurant for lunch, but dinner is more exclusive.

    MacDonald's

I have to say I was very unpleasantly surprised to see that MacDonald's restaurants are very bad in Goteborg in every sense, there are not many choices regarding food , they are not clean, very, very young people work there (as if they don't have any older supervisor), you have to pay to go to the toilet... Not a nice experience at all. Outdoor bilboards for MacDonald's are too big, not corresponding the quality of the service.

And here they are.... the pancakes!!! Hahaha, don't they look delicious?? :-) Hahaha, I am doing some bragging as I baked them myself. Mmmm... one bad part though, I am hired now to do the Thursday pancake day dinner :-(( Arggg! Hahaha, I guess I make them taste too good :-)

As you can see they are served with the whipped cream and strawberry jam (lingonberry will do also!). As an extra touch there is some apple sauce on the pancake. Hahaha, it was only put on the pancake for this picture though, lol. But the pancake with warm apple compote does taste really good! And this one tastes extra good as it is home-made with apples from our own apple tree :-)

  • Knäckebröd - Sweden
    Knäckebröd
    by sim1

Instead of mentioning restaurants for the whole of Sweden, I thought it might be nice to mention some typical Swedish food instead. Hahaha, and one thing I always thought that was typical Swedish is Knäckebröd.... and yes.... it is true!!! I've never seen such a huge collection of different types of knäckebröd in my life in a supermarket as in Sweden! Wow, shelves filled with all different kinds of knäckebröd! And not only the little square packages I am used to in The Netherlands, but also huge round ones, as you can see in the bottom of this picture. Now I love knäckerbröd, so it was a pleasant surprise to see all these varieties :-)

Knäckebröd is Swedish crispbread, thin and very crispy bread. Hahaha, it's very noisy to eat because it is so crisp. This type of bread used to be baked because it would keep very long. They only had to bake this bread twice a year, so that was very convenient. Nowadays people eat it because it is healthy food and it has lots of fibre, and of course.... it tastes really good :-)

  • Thursday: Pea soup and Pancakes! :-) - Sweden
    Thursday: Pea soup and
    Pancakes! :-)
    by sim1

Okay..... I have to admit... when I first heard of this I though: pea soup with pancakes??? Those Swedish people are really weird! Hahaha, but I've changed my mind! I had the pea soup and pancakes the other week.... of course on a Thursday, because that's the traditional day of the week to have this menu... and I really enjoyed it! No picture of the pancakes here yet, hahaha, I had no time to take a picture, I was too eager to eat the delicious looking pancakes, lol. But I did have time to make a picture of the pea soup. You should eat it with a knäckebrod with cheese on the side, of course a glass of beer, and most important some real Swedish Flag punch (I'll write some more about this punch in another tip!).

The punch is served warm and it goes very well together with the rest of the dishes. After having had the pea soup, you have the pancakes. Mmmm, they are served with whipped cream and strawberry jam, and it tastes great! You can see it more like a dessert than as a real course of the meal. But it's a huge dessert though, hahaha, as I had more than one pancake to eat :-))) So for next weeks dinner I already asked for a new round of Pea soup and pancakes! Hahaha, I can hardly wait until it's Thursday again :-)))

If you are in Sweden you probably will see this dish on the list as a day menu on a Thursday in lots of Swedish restaurants. Don't hesitate to try it, because it really tastes good! Hahaha, even if it sounds weird when you hear about it for the first time :-)
