Waffles

by sim1

Waffles are maybe not typical Swedish, but I was so surprised to see them here. Almost everywhere you go, you can buy waffles. And hmmmmm..... I love them! They are served with strawberry jam and whipped cream, yummie! This picture was taken in Norway though, but here the waffles are served with sour cream.... eeks... a weird surprise when you count on having whipped cream, LOL :-) But it still tasted great! :-)))

Strömming

by sim1

You most likely see the word 'Strömming' somewhere when you visit Sweden. This is the word for baked herring and it tastes great! The traditional way to serve it is with red onion on (of course) a knäckebröd, another very common way is to serve it with mashed potatoes. But there are several other ways to serve it. So if you see a kiosk selling 'strömming' don't hesitate to give it a try.

Knäckebröd

by sim1

Instead of mentioning restaurants for the whole of Sweden, I thought it might be nice to mention some typical Swedish food instead. Hahaha, and one thing I always thought that was typical Swedish is Knäckebröd.... and yes.... it is true!!! I've never seen such a huge collection of different types of knäckebröd in my life in a supermarket as in Sweden! Wow, shelves filled with all different kinds of knäckebröd! And not only the little square packages I am used to in The Netherlands, but also huge round ones, as you can see in the bottom of this picture. Now I love knäckerbröd, so it was a pleasant surprise to see all these varieties :-)Knäckebröd is Swedish crispbread, thin and very crispy bread. Hahaha, it's very noisy to eat because it is so crisp. This type of bread used to be baked because it would keep very long. They only had to bake this bread twice a year, so that was very...

Utö värdshus: Archipelago gourmet

by Sjalen

Award winning, yet relaxed restaurant on the island of Utö in Stockholm's southern archipelago (get here by boat from Strömkajen or Årsta/Dalarö). A mix of Swedish archipelago dishes and international things and in a great setting (see my Utö page). Home made veggie lasagna with chilli tzatziki and a cool blueberry cider!

Dagens Rýt: Eating cheap

by Leipzig

Many restaurants in Sweden offer a so-called "Dagens Rýt" (dish of the day ) during lunchtime (11am - 2pm). This normally includes a main dish with sallad, bread and coffee. Prices range from 30 to 90 SEK - depends on the restaurant. However, it usually worth the price.

Swedish food in general

by SwedeSarah

I thought I'd write a bit about Swedish food in general since it's tough to pick just one restaurant in the whole of Sweden! ;)So, what do we eat here? Not only meatballs, hehe! It's very varied I think. There's 'husmanskost' (like 'homefood') which is traditional dishes like meatballs, pytt i panna, 'falukorv' sausages, peasoup etc. But it's also very popular to eat foreign food such as Mexican, Thai, Chinese etc. A lot of lazy people just warm up something in the microwave. ;)There are many vegetarians/vegans in Sweden, so it's easy to find such food. There are always vegetarian alternatives on the menu. Usually on the menu at restaurants where you can have lunch is 'the day's lunch' but you can choose from other dishes too of course. ;) Here, the most common fastfood chains are Burger King and McDonald's. We don't really have anymore ones, hehe. 'Gatukök' ('street kitchen')are common...

MacDonald's: Avoid MacDonald's in Goteborg

by belgrade03

I have to say I was very unpleasantly surprised to see that MacDonald's restaurants are very bad in Goteborg in every sense, there are not many choices regarding food , they are not clean, very, very young people work there (as if they don't have any older supervisor), you have to pay to go to the toilet... Not a nice experience at all. Outdoor bilboards for MacDonald's are too big, not corresponding the quality of the service.
