Swedish food

by mariquita

Swedish food is not very elaborated and not particularly tasty. It is a typical peasant's food from an Northern country where the fill-in and warm-up feelings are more important than the taste.A traditional dish is made of small diced potatoes with bacon.Try it once, if you like, and then pick other kinds of restaurants for a pleasant stay.

various: Fishy fast food

by Sjalen

Fried Baltic herring ("strömming" on the east coast, "sill" in the south). Served on crispy bread or with mashed potato and lingonberries if you are hungrier. In the far south you get it with raw onion while you get varieties with parsley or dill in the rest of eastern Sweden. Found in harbour areas everywhere - try Strandvägen in Stockholm.

Bryggeriet: House brewery and good food

by Sjalen

With the huge copper vats of the brewery as the centrepiece of the restaurant, its hard to resist their beer (especially the dark one!) but the food is also good (and they have at least one proper veggie meal cooked with flair). Summertime you can enjoy the food in the cosy courtyard with barbecue. Local "egg cake" with diced pork.

Coffe - Kaffe.........bread and pastry

by Thoomuch

Sweetness is a prominent characteristic of Swedish bread, although unsweetened types are available in most stores. If you want to spread something typically Swedish on a slice of bread, try messmör, which is a soft whey-cheese from the north of Sweden. It is quite sweet, too! When it comes to drinking coffee, Swedes rank second in the world (per capita, of course). People usually drink coffee for breakfast, after lunch or during the highly esteemed coffee breaks, but there are also special coffee parties (kafferep). If you are invited to one, you can expect to find at least seven sorts of home-made buns and cakes, a kind of minimum amount according to Swedish housewives´standardsIf you get invited home to a Swede, expect to get coffe...........

Smörgåsbord

by Thoomuch

The word smörgås means something like "open sandwich", and bord is the Swedish word for "table", but still a smörgåsbord is not a table full of sandwiches. This specialty instead consists of a number of small dishes, from which you can take your pick. An average smörgåsbord may, for instance, contain a number of herring dishes (sweet-pickled herring, pickled herring with onions, mustard, dill, etc.), Swedish meatballs, salmon, pies, salads, 'Jansson´s temptation' (sliced herring, potatoes and onions baked in cream), eggs, bread, boiled and fried potatoes and so on. Smörgåsbord was served already in the18th century but at that time it was used as an appetizer before the main course. Gradually, however, it has become a meal in itself. Today few people ask for more after having tried everything on a smörgåsbord.

Hard bread - Knäckebröd/Hårt bröd

by Thoomuch

Knäckebröd - hard bread has very old traditions. Nowdays it is sold by the company Wasa abroad to. But in Sweden Wasa is just one of many different makers of this bread. There is no special time you eat this bread, you can have it all the time for breakfast, lunch, just for a sandwich and so on.It is also very lowcalorie bread and a lot of fibers in it, so it is good for your stomach (both for the inside and perhaps your outside)Go in to a foodstore and look, there is a lot different brands, colours, tastes of Knäckebröd.
