NK Department Store, Stockholm: An Upmarket Shopping Centre
  • Tip Rating:
  • NK Department Store is an upmarket shopping centre located along the busy shopping street known as Hamngatan right in the heart of Central Business District in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.

As in the other large departmental stores in Stockholm, wide range of household items are available in NK Department Store ranging from textiles and clothings to kitchen utensils and souvenirs.

Kitchen wares, textiles and souvenirs can be recommended to foreign tourists.

As this is an upmarket departmental store, prices of goods are a little bit expensive.

    Hand blown glass from Sweden

Sweden is famous for its hand blown and hand painted glass, and Kosta Boda is one of the most famous brands. There are quite a few shops that sell Kosta Boda (and also other brands of hand blown glass). Whichever brand you use all are equally beautiful, and they come in many differnt design styles. They are great to take home as a souvenir or as a present to a friend. The glasswork doesn't come cheap, but I think it is worth the money.

Take a look at their website to get an impression of Kosta Boda Glass

Flea Market, Uppsala: A Saturday market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Uppsala Flea Market is held every Saturday from early in the morning until approximately 3.00 p.m. in the afternoon. It is held at Vaksala Torget (Vaksala Square) just opposite the new Uppsala Concert and Congress Hall in the heart of the city of Uppsala. The square is usually packed with locals searching for bargains and the market may sound interesting to foreign tourists.

Basically old artilcles and items still in perfect conditions are on sale by the dealers in the market. Most of them deal in porcelains, books and magazines, souvenirs from other countries, clothings, electrical goods, cameras and cds, dvds, video tapes and even old LP records and grammophone. If you are lucky you may even find some antiques in the market. Nevertheless you may also find some dealers dealing in new consumer products especially watches. Don't forget to bargain before making payment for your products.

Souvenirs, crystals, glasswares, porcelains are some of the old items highly recommended at Flea Market in Uppsala.

Most small items such as porcelains are sold at between SEK10.00 and SEK20.00 each.

At Markets: You got to try the POLKA PIG!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • You buy these on markets and in some selected supermarkets.

Polkagris (Polka-pig) is a type of hard candy that from the start came only in peppermint flavour and in the shape of an approx 30cm stick. But it grew in poularity and nowdays its made in several flavours: strawberry, liquorice, pear, toffee, lemon, blueberry and many more. Also the shapes have changed. You can now get it in the shape of lollies and caramels.

In June 1859 the first Polkagris was made in Gränna in Sweden, by the widow Amalia Eriksson. She never told anyone her recipe but people figured out her secret. The first one was her daughter Ida.

No one is sure where this yummy sweet got its name. It could be from the dance polka as it reached Sweden at about this time and since the candy is swirled to get a red and white stripe pattern that reminds of a piggy's curled tail. So there you have it: POLKAGRIS - POLKAPIG!

    Swedish Sweets
  • Tip Rating:
  • In Swedish, candy is called 'godis' or 'karameller'. Almost every bigger grocery store (ICA or Konsum) has a stand with many, many different kinds of sweets (see picture), where you pick the kinds you like and put them in a bag. At the counter, the cashier will weigh your bag and you pay for the weight.

'Karamellkungen', the biggest of supplier of sweets in Sweden, is also present in Finland, Norway, Denmark and the UK, but under the name 'Candyking'.

We Swedes love our sweets; an average Swede consumes almost 12 kg per year!!! But not just the Swedes love the Swedish candy...people of other nationalities that I've met do too.

When I lived abroad, the thing I missed the most was the sweets, so on a regular basis my mom sent some over, and as soon as friends from Sweden came to visit they had to bring sweets...However, I could never keep them for myself; everyone else liked them way too much! I'm always buying candy in other countries, but so far I haven't found any sweets that can match the Swedish ones...

The Swedish candy is the best in the world - ask anyone who has tried it!

From 69 Swedish crowns per kilo and up...

    Going to a local auction
  • Tip Rating:
  • In summer all around rural Sweden there are auctions going on, you know the kind where you bid on things and the highest bid wins...

I have been to many of these, and this is an opportunity to make real bargains. Often the whole spectacle is full of people, set outdoors, and a real ”festilval” where local people show up from all around to see the offers.

The speaker will be talking in Swedish of course, but if you approach him or her in advance, and make your presence known, and tell what items you plan to bid on, then keep close to the front, you may get some help to translate the sums.
As i have stated before, Swedes are definitely eager to help tourists, but you have to ask for it, we are not the most "open" people, and have a difficulty approaching strangers.

Also, if you visit an auction in a more remota area, they will definitely feel flattered to have foreign visitors, and I can almost guarantee they will do anything to help you out! Good luck.

The picture shows an auction north of Hudiksvall, summer of 2002.
The biggest item for sale was an old Volvo car from the 60's. I didn't bid for it though.

Anything goes, but you may want to check for local antiques.

    As much as you like!

Fish – so fresh that you believe you swim :)

Ah - fresh Swedish salmon and

Ah, if you like fish then nothing is better than FRESH Swedish fish. (I have to mention maybe that I live in the centre of Germany and won’t even think to buy fish here, as I am never sure if it is him or maybe his grandfather…)
It is no matter where you buy the fish in Sweden – either in supermarkets or on fish markets, it will be fresh and you can see it ! These guys did swim and dream of fish babies just a couple of hours ago ! You can get the whole pallet, from salmon to tuna, fresh crabs and shrimps, mussels, marinated crabs in all sizes and spices. YUMM…

Prices vary of course, depending on the amount. But for me, the prices are still very much reasonable, much less than I would have to pay for in Germany. And this, despite usually food in Sweden is a bit more expensive than in Germany.

So if you are in Sweden and have rented a house for example, or are out for caming – what are you waiting for ? Fresh fish on a barbecue, with a beer in the evening – what can be better ?
