Gudrun Sjödén: Unique women's clothes

by Sjalen

Gudrun has designed clothes for many years now and has shops in the three largest cities. Here you find classy casual wear which is relaxing to wear, often with cheerful ethno- or floral patterns in the fabric. Outside Sweden, she only has a shop in Nuremberg, but you can mail order from her catalogue too if you live in other Scandinavian countries or the UK. Linen trousers, stripy long sleeved t-shirts in deep colours, Russian looking skirts... A bit more than the High Street shops but it is very good quality and you won't find it all over the world.

Indiska: Indian clothes

by Sjalen

I haven't bought the book explaining its history so I do not know how an Indian style clothes shop came to be this big in Sweden but Indiska is a well established "High Street" chain in all major towns. I ticked women's clothes here but only as that's what there is most of. There is also a lot of childrens clothes and Indian (and inspired) kitchen ware and decorations. Unfortunately, the stopped with menswear some years ago. I used to love their huge and baggy Indian shirts...:( The company also has work ethics so if they are to be trusted, there is no child labour and similar. They also work with Mumtaz Paan House in Bradford, UK (see page) who has produced their "Indiska" cook book! All sorts of sweaters, shirts and dresses, colourful cushion cases, equally colourful childrens clothes, hanging candle holders... Usually not that much.

Netto; Hemkop; Markets at Kviberg and Bellevue: Budgit shopping

by Annagirl

Food is expensive here in Sweden. So the best is to find the Netto shop and also Hemkop. For interesting buys go also with trem 6,7 or 11 to Kviberg or Bellevue for good buys (vegetables, fruit and other interesting buys) Can even find good buys with clothing and shoes, you must just have the patience!

by Saladinos

I did buy different wooden devices that helps you in massag. there are different sizes and applies for the back, foot, head. The prices are reasonable and ranges from 1-100 dollars.

H & M: If you want it cheap and durable

by Saladinos

It is a big shop that you find in so many different locations in the scandenavian region. They have a collection of all different clothes for men, kids and women. I liked their sox paks and the army belts.I bought 2 wool jakets and was given the 3rd for free. I went when they had their sale and it was great cause i could buy some clothes that i wanted and get some for my friends.

various: Letterboxes

by Sjalen

Local craft shops. Whilst Americans have their rounded ones with flags and the Brits have their slit in the door, Swedes have art! If you live in your own house, there is no end to what you can do to please local artists as you buy a new letterbox and why shouldn't you as a visitor buy one too? I don't know why, but painted letterboxes is big in Sweden. Being Scandinavian, the motifs are usually scenic or rural, such as a yacht in the archipelago or a countryside farm :-)

Swedish Sweets

by Zandra

In Swedish, candy is called 'godis' or 'karameller'. Almost every bigger grocery store (ICA or Konsum) has a stand with many, many different kinds of sweets (see picture), where you pick the kinds you like and put them in a bag. At the counter, the cashier will weigh your bag and you pay for the weight. 'Karamellkungen', the biggest of supplier of sweets in Sweden, is also present in Finland, Norway, Denmark and the UK, but under the name 'Candyking'. We Swedes love our sweets; an average Swede consumes almost 12 kg per year!!! But not just the Swedes love the Swedish candy...people of other nationalities that I've met do too. When I lived abroad, the thing I missed the most was the sweets, so on a regular basis my mom sent some over, and as soon as friends from Sweden came to visit they had to bring sweets...However, I could never keep them for myself; everyone else liked them way too...

Flea markets are the best!

by ana_21

Well, of course the prices in Sweden are rather high but you can always find the way to buy something nice and reasonably priced. As well in big cities as in little towns look for flea market, in the summer they are usually on Saturdays.

various: Countryside auctions

by Sjalen

All around the country, summertime means auction in small, forgotten villages. I doubt you will end up in "Antiques Roadshow" with your find but if you want to find something unusual or kitsch whilst doing something VERY Swedish, this is the thing to experience. You will find notes on auctions in local papers and on village centre notice boards. Usually, it is in a farm somewhere where the farmer has died, or in special "auction houses" in villages. Go there well in advance to see what you like. Household items and art that you find exotic and/or Swedish. Anything from a fiver to thousands
