600-year old fortress tower Kärnan situated on the heights above the main square (Stortorget) is the remains of the castle which was situated in Helsingborg from the early Middle Ages until 1676 when most of the castle, with the exception of Kärnan, was pulled down. It's the most famous landmarks of the city which is still impressive until these days. If you climb up through the stairs until the top, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Öresund Sound, the town and the countryside beyond. The tower is 34 metres high and the walls are 4.5 metres thick.
Kärnan is the thing that most people visit when in Helsingborg. It's a tower used to defend the city.
You can go in for a small fee. The view from the top is verry good, but in my opinion the history of the place is even better. Particular if you combine the history with the architectural solutions to practical problems. The loo, for example, is just a hole in the wall. That way you can *** on the people below.
even if there is little left of the karnan fortress in helsingborg it's still worth the long uphill walk especially because of the nice view you get from there.
there is not much left of the original fortress but the tower, but what is left is quite nice.
The Karnan Tower is the most famous and known landmark of Helsingborg. It was built more than 600 years ago. To the top of the tower of 34 mts high there is an spiral stair. It is visited by thousands of visitors to enjoy the panoramic view of the town, the Sound and the danish neighbour city of Helsingor. The buildings surrounding Karnan were pulled down more than 300 years ago and the tower was renovated in 1894.
The "kernel" is a well known symbol for Helsingborg and you can see it on my intro photo (not the City Hall tower). More than 600 years old, it had its heyday in medieval times but then almost fell into disrepair in the 16th century until the Danes who then held this province decided to repair it during the wars with Sweden. Once Skåne fell into Swedish hands, the whole fortress apart from the tower was dismantled in the "peace process". Today, you can walk up long stairs from Stortorget, this way of approaching it was created in the 19th century so that the people of Helsingborg could enjoy the marvellous views across the strait. SEK 20 entrance fee.
See a great view from Kärnen of the "Øresund" sound especially the sunsets are very beautiful.
According to Arild Huitfeldt in "Danmarckis Rigis Krønicke" the Danish legend King Frode Fredegod build "Kernen" (Danish spelling) in the year 1, and it is considered the oldest building in Skåne (Skåne was part of Denmark until 1658)
Kärnan is the only tower left from the old Helsingborg Castle, one of the strongest fortifications during early medival time. Due to the fact that the Danish army concoured the castle twice in the Skåne-war 1675-79, the Swedish king tear down all the fortification in the city and left just this tower standing as it does today.
The view from the tower i magnificient.
The tower is the remains of the medieval castle which was situated in Helsingborg from the early Middle Ages until 1676 when most of the castle, with the exception of tower, was pulled down. Today the tower is open for visitors, and the reward for walking the stairs all the way up to the top is a splendid view of the City and the sound.
Probably the best known symbol of Helsingborg is this tower (Karnan). The tower is a part of the what remains of the 600 year old fortress that once protected the town. The tower is 35 meters high and the walls are approx 4.5 meters thick. Near the tower you will also find Nicolaiskolan High School.
Helsingborg's most famous landmark, has been watching over the town for more than 600 years. Originally, Kärnan was surrounded by thick brick wealls, but after the Danish-Swedish war in the end of the 17th century, the walls were torned down. Today, only the 35 metres high tower remains and it is well worth a visit, even if you have to walk quite some stars to get there. The view is spectacular!
A short walk from the terminal we make our way here. Not many tourists around , so lots of good photo opps. Most of what was the castle burned down , but just the one section remains . They best part is the view over the city....makes the climb up worth it
I was excited to see such amazing panoramic views from different corners of the Kärnan tower! The neat thing is that looking at the shores of Sweden you see Denmark's shores very good;-)
This is the old tower of former Helsinborg fortress which is opposite to Helsing¸r fortress in Denmark (other coast of the stright).
