Klippan Things to Do

As Klippan is at the foot of Söderåsen, it is in an area which was once very geologically active and in what was Sweden's biggest coal mine (doesn't say a lot) there is now a dinousaur park in nearby Åstorp with models of 50 different species along a trail in the park landscape. Great for kids and they will also find merry-go-rounds and playground activities. Open May to August and weekends in September.

    Of respectable size...

As you come down to the canyon and begin your walk back on a "plank path" so common in Swedish national parks, you walk along the little stream. Quite dramatic at times and full of rare plants, frogs and things. There is also Rårödpågens well, a well supposedly sprung up where a shepherd from Råröd fell and died. You can drink the water here and ladles are provided - just hang them back on the sign by the well (see second picture). In fact, you can drink the water all over the stream as long as the water is moving somewhat. Delicious! Working with environmental matters, I can also tell you that this stream is so clean that it is in a European water monitoring project.

The whole of Söderåsen is full of slopes covered in rocks, stones and pebbles. Some of these are remains from quarries in earlier days but then there are some which, like this one, is a result of frost cracking! Because the hills are full of water always on its way downhill, when this freezes in winter, it affects the rock which crack, usually quite a noisy procedure! Trees grow sort of sideways amongst the stones, anyway they can.

The National Park restaurant is at its entrance at Skäralid. Not an upmarket cosy place by any means but a perfectly adequate countryside place serving Swedish lunch dishes, beer, coffee and cakes to park visitors. Lots of pensioners have coffee here after finishing a walk around and local handymen seems to come here for lunch deals.

A typical Skåne inn, which is more famous than usual, due to the fact that a well known 1940s film ("Kalle på Spången" for Swedes reading this) about life in Skåne was shot here when Röstånga inn turned down the film team. They are also as many other inns here, famous for their November goose and Christmas smörgåsbord.
