    Espresso House: Coffee chain

by Sjalen Updated Apr 4, 2011

Espresso House is a whole chain of cafes, the Scanian version of Starbucks, and was founded in Lund some years ago. These days it is spreading to the north of Sweden too and maybe they will find their way abroad now that they have English investment. There are several in Malmö, including in the Hansacompagniet shopping centre and along the pedestrian section of Södra Förstadsgatan (my least favourite as it is very cramped and a bit worn), but my favourite setting is probably the one in Västra Hamnen, overlooking the water. Especially in summer when you can sit in deck chairs outside or even on the sun deck itself (see local tip for images). What is nice about this chain is that they import their own Italian coffe and they know how to make it good - ask for an inferno and you'll see what I mean. A bit more expensive than the average Swedish cafe but so much better coffee. The cakes are all a fusion of traditional Swedish and American so you will find a variety of muffins, wheat buns and seasonal flavours. All very tasty, but I think everything contains too much butter (OK in cookies but not in cakes) since my tummy is sensitive to some of their cakes. I also wish they would have more traditionally Swedish stuff and not try to fusion everything and put the custard as a base and apple pie on top of it and similar silly ideas. They also do sandwiches and a scones breakfast deal which is superb. The scones look nothing like they do in Devon that's for sure, but they are yummy still.

Favorite Dish: The cheese cake muffin thingy and the vanilla bun.

Espresso House is indeed the swedish version of Starbucks and a failsafe option for good coffee.
