Malmöhus Castle is Scandinavia's oldest surviving renaissance-era castle. It was constructed in 1434 and finally completed in the 1500s. Over the next two hundred years, it was one of the residences of the Danish Royal Family. After Sweden took control of Malmö, the role of this castle-fortress quickly declined and later became nothing more than a prison.
Today Malmöhus houses the City Museum of Malmö. The museum entrance fee is 40 SEK for adults, and the museum closes each day at 1600.

Belonging to the Malmö museum organisation is this separate building housing museums on maritime and technical things. Very good with children on a rainy day, it is not big but includes a section on shipping, including an old Swedish submarine to climb into and explore, as well as sections on airplanes and steam engines.

Teknik-Och Sjöfartsmuseet is a well-presented technology and maritime museum displaying aircraft, motor vehicles, steam engines as well as the submarine U-3. This latter you can actually walk into - it's very cramped inside and immediately made me feel very claustrophobic, a sensation which only became stronger when I discovered that it would originally have had a crew of 25 men! It was bad enough with only two of us in there!
Admission to this museum is included in the price of the ticket to Malmöhus (and vice versa).

The main museums of Malmö are based around Malmöhus - a renaissance castle which is the oldest surviving example in Scandinavia, and a monument from the period when Malmö belonged to Denmark; it was founded in the 15th century, and rebuilt by Christian III in the 16th century. You can walk though the royal apartments with their fine interiors and portrait collections. The building also houses the Municipal Museum (archaeology, natural history and art and culture). If you have children, the Natural history section (to the right and down stairs as you enter) will be the best entertainment - the aquarium is fascinating, and my personal favourites were the gorgeously coloured poison frogs, the sloths and the fruit bats! Wonderful!
Admission I think is 40SEK (this includes admission to the Kommendanthuset and The Museum of Technology).

Other than the The Museum of Technology. the military musuem also houses the Vagnmusset or the Carriage Museum. It displayed carriages from the 18th century, coaches, and even ancient motorcycles! Ha, my biker hubby would cry if he knew what he was missing.
Note: Received news that it closed down already.

Malmöhus Castle is the oldest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia and was built in 1436 during the regency of Eric of Pomerania. He also built a citadel which was destroyed later.
The Danish King Christian III built a new castle, in 1537, which was finished in 1542.
When Malmö became Swedish in 1658, it no longer served as a royal castle and the defensive functions of the castle were instead reinforced by the Swedish military forces.

After saying my prayers at St Petri, Liz and I toggled off to Lilla Torg to have lunch. A cinch since that little square was full of restaurants. Fortified, we set off by foot to Malmöhus Castle, Sweden's oldest surviving renaissance castle and a monument from Malmö's Danish period. Hard to believe but this castle houses 4 museums on the inside! Yup, you can find the City Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Aquarium and Tropicarium, and the Konstmuseet inside. On the outside was the quintessential castle moat. The clear waters caught the odd-looking castle reflection splendidly. Yes, it is odd! From the outside, you'll see two massive drum towers looking for all the world like farm storage silos and strung between them a single slim building.

Ha, this is what Hubby would have loved to see. An ancient harley davison . I'm willing to bet if this baby can run, it would make a helluvaof a noise. The Vagnmusset (Carriage Museum) had many more of these vehicles from the 18th century . Not bad considering that it used to be a former military horse stable .

Now somewhere in the depths of Malmöhus Castle lies a little chapel. The only extraordinary thing about this place was the depiction of Christ et al ( angels, clouds, etc ) in full mosaic glory ! The artwork just took our breath away. Since the place was empty, Liz just sat on the floor to admire the handiwork. As for me, I did something crazier.

Somewhere in the depths of Malmöhus Castle lies a little chapel with an extraordinary mosaic ceiling. As i laid on my back to take this picture, I thought of the poor sod who must have cemented one tile at a time to complete the gigantic jig-saw artwork.
