Bike around, Malmö
Short distances and excellent public transport make it easy to get around in Malmö, and you can do so both quickly and comfortably. Everything in the city centre is within walking distance. And what's more, Malmö is ideally suited for bicycles; it's flat and there are numerous cycle paths which criss-cross the city.
Malmö being flat, many people cycle to work or to the train station. This is the largest (and only!) bike raft in Sweden in the canal at the Central Station commuter train corner. As I say in my sports tip, the central station tourist information will tell you which companies currently rent out bikes.
I was highly impressed with the changes that have been made to induce people into using bicycles in this city. The geography certainly helps with few hills to be seen but several city centre streets have been converted to pedestrian/cycle lane only with dedicated cycle traffic lights. There is even a cycle barometer the counts the cyclists that pass it each day, this had over 1m people pass it in less than 6 months which is impressive for a city with such a small population. The main aims of the initiative are to improve fitness and reduce car emissions.
Malmo has, like many other north European countries, a tradition in cycling. the older your bicycle, the better.
