In the old town maltings, a brewery has been set up and it belongs to my favourite establishments in Sweden just for the ambience. The brewery copper vats are centre pieces in the restaurant which itself is in a half timbered house - all very German looking. In the yard, surrounded by these lovely buildings, you can enjoy the food outdoors in summer and then including barbecue evenings. There is also salmon, local "egg cake" with salted pork and good meat dishes and a typical herring buffet some days as well as a daily lunch offer weekdays. Children are made welcome and have two main courses to chose from but can be accommodated in other ways too. The picturesque (although with mixed reviews) "Sekelgården" hotel is next door if you want to spoil yourself rotten and go from one to the other. You can see more brewery pictures in the travelogue.
Favorite Dish: The 50/50 beer (they also do a dark and a light one that I am less impressed with, as well as a seasonal). Food includes quorn fillets with potato cake which as you can see means that even vegetarians get something other than a fried egg and a lettuce leaf :-) I can also recommend the honey-glazed ribs with coleslaw.
Located close to downtown Ystad, in Långgatan, within a wooden house with entrance from the yard lies a restaurant gem! If you come early there will not be so many people. The food is high quality and has affordable prices, everyone can join in. Their wine selection is good and they make their own beer available in 2 different variations (dark or light). Don't miss out on this little pearl of a restaurant - for the food, location and drinks! Oh, and the service is good too!
Favorite Dish: The peppersteak is good, however the portion (150 g) may seem small
and if you are more hungtry go for a bigger steak.
As I was visiting Ystad as a result of seeing several Wallander films - Fridholfs was a must to visit. I have an enjoyable breakfast buffet - followed by a semlor (Shrove/Fat Tuesday fayre only).
It was pleasant and all the customers seemed to be local - I was there in early February of course, so no tourists nor film crews.
I even broke a cup!
This crowded restaurant is placed on Stortoget. It was nicely, comfortable decorated and had nice staff.
With the starters they served a sweet kind of bread with butter, delicious!
Cream sauce was made with real double cream, heavy on the stomach but tasted wonderfull. Nice winelist but expensive then again alcohol is expensive in Sweden.
It is hard to imagine a more wonderful place to have your coffee. Just sit down in the cosy café or its bric-a-brac garden and read! They sometimes serve soup too if you need something more substantial after the good book :-)
Vendel Ales Stenar is one of the best restaurants in the Scanian region and in all it's fantastic. It's 10 minutes outside Ystad, just by the sea and has the most wonderful atmosphere.
Favorite Dish: I love their barbecue, that they make in summer.
Apparently, this is the first and the only fishmonger in the whole city of Ystad and it's been open for only 1 month (as of August 2008). You can grab a small seafood lunch there (there is only 1 table with 2 chairs) so it's intended mostly for take-away. The service is very friendly (happy to speak English) :-)
If you want to eat fish, go there!
Favorite Dish: I had a pasta salad with smoke salmon. I didn't know that salmon was smoked so I inadvertently asked to microwave it. It tasted still good.
I was feeling a little tired and and thought a break in the cafe would be good. It was busy and there was a good mix of people in the cafe. The staff were friendly and they had a good selection of products available.
Favorite Dish: very seasonal but try the Semlor if you can find one!
