Ystad Things to Do

  • The Franciscan Monastery in Ystad.

The Franciscan Monastery in Ystad is from about 1267. There is also a beautiful garden and a herb garden near it.

  • In the footsteps of Kurt Wallander

Inspector Kurt Wallander of the Ystad police is the main character in a series of detective novels by Henning Mankell. The tourist office has a brochure where you can find the most places named in the books of Henning Mankell. Kurt Wallander lives in Mariagatan. A lot of hotel rooms and vacation homes are equipped with maps and brochures that point...

The coast of Scania esp. nearby Ales Stenar is very good for paragliding. The uprising winds create thermal winds needed for paragliding

Ales stenar can be found in the south of Sweden, near the town of Kåseberga, east of Ystad. You can park your car in the little harbour of Kåseberga. This megalithic monument consist of 59 standing stones, and the monument is in total 70 meters long. Ales Stenar is called after king Ales, who is burried there, according to the legend

  • Ystad beach

Long and fine sand beach situated to the east of the harbor. Convenient if you do not want to travel out to the beaches on Osterlen. The beach is within walking distance of the town. There is also parking in the pine forest surrounding the beach. Shallow water so it is quite child safe and good for windsurfing. Can be a bit crowded in the summer...

  • Ale Stenar

The prehistoric stone circle as featured on my homepage is truly magnificent. You need to climb a steep path to get there. Coming from Holland i like this grand views on the nearby surroundings.

  • Sankta Maria

They have a horn in the church that blows from 9:15 pm to 3 in the morning to tell the town that all is well. I figure that all is well if horns aren't going off in the night.

  • Inspector Wallander walks

The Wallander crime novels by Henning Mankell have become bestsellers not only in Sweden but in Germany and the Netherlands amongst others and are found on Amazon UK too. Now you can follow in Wallander's footsteps with the help of a map from the tourist office. They can also offer you a package stay, including lunch at Wallander's local pizza...

  • Stonehenge by the sea!

Ale Stenar is a magical place in Kåseberga, south east of Ystad itself. It is a large ship setting but no one knows what it was built for as the stones were in a bad condition when found and have had to be carefully restored. It looks like an astronomical setting since the whole monument is on a cliff by the sea, well placed for sun rises and...

  • Half timbered houses

During your ordinary town walk, you will see wonderful buildings all around you. Scandinavia's oldest remaining half timbered house can be found in the pedestrian shopping street and "Änglahuset" (Angel's House) is another well known beauty, unfortunately spoiled by housing a tobacconist...

  • Greyfriars Abbey

Today the town museum with local history and a herb garden. The abbey is the oldest intact one in Sweden together with the one in Vadstena.

  • Maria Church

The church can be seen all over town and is famous for the old tradition of sounding the horn in the tower every night from 21.15 and then every fifteen minutes until 03.00 to tell the citizens that all is well :-)

Ystad Restaurants

  • Wallander's Favourite Cafe

As I was visiting Ystad as a result of seeing several Wallander films - Fridholfs was a must to visit. I had an enjoyable breakfast buffet - followed by a semlor (Shrove/Fat Tuesday fayre only). It was pleasant and all the customers seemed to be local - this was a first visit which took place in early February, so no tourists nor film crews.Since...

  • Next to St Maria's Church

I was feeling a little tired and and thought a break in the cafe would be good. It was busy and there was a good mix of people in the cafe. The staff were friendly and they had a good selection of products available. very seasonal but try the Semlor if you can find one!

  • Get the peppersteak or the hamburger!

Located close to downtown Ystad, in Långgatan, within a wooden house with entrance from the yard lies a restaurant gem! If you come early there will not be so many people. The food is high quality and has affordable prices, everyone can join in. Their wine selection is good and they make their own beer available in 2 different variations (dark or...

  • Brewery restaurant

In the old town maltings, a brewery has been set up and it belongs to my favourite establishments in Sweden just for the ambience. The brewery copper vats are centre pieces in the restaurant which itself is in a half timbered house - all very German looking. In the yard, surrounded by these lovely buildings, you can enjoy the food outdoors in...

  • Wonderful organic food on the...

Vendel Ales Stenar is one of the best restaurants in the Scanian region and in all it's fantastic. It's 10 minutes outside Ystad, just by the sea and has the most wonderful atmosphere. I love their barbecue, that they make in summer.

  • The only seafood shop/fastfood...

Apparently, this is the first and the only fishmonger in the whole city of Ystad and it's been open for only 1 month (as of August 2008). You can grab a small seafood lunch there (there is only 1 table with 2 chairs) so it's intended mostly for take-away. The service is very friendly (happy to speak English) :-)If you want to eat fish, go there! I...

Ystad Transportation

  • Great service from car hire company

I found the prices and service provided by Hyrbilen, Komtab Biluthyrning, Malmovagen 9, Ystad to be excellent. Half the price Hertz were charging and they drove us back to train station after the car hire period! Telephone 0411-175 00.

  • Train

Trains leave frequently from Malmö and Simrishamn for Ystad. There are also direct trains from Copenhagen to match the Bornholm ferries.

  • Ferry

As one of Sweden's main ferry terminals it is easy to reach. For 200 years, this was our main connection to mainland Europe through the ferry to Stralsund in Germany. Today, most ferries from Germany arrive in neighbouring Trelleborg but it's not far in between the two. In Ystad you instead find Unity Line and Polferries to Poland (as well as the...

Ystad Off The Beaten Path

  • Mariagatan 10, Ystad

This was the location of Wallander's home in the books by Henning Mankell - although the number was never stated, I understand the description matches this apartment block.

  • Marsvinsholm Castle

Marsvin means guinea pig in Swedish but that's not what this castle is about as it also means harbour porpoise in Danish and this used to be a Danish province. Marsvin was the name of a very wealthy Danish noble family. The castle outside Ystad has a lovely rural setting and romantic turrets and towers. It hosts equestrian shows and concerts but is...

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Ystad is the perfect place for a stroll. It's too compact to do damage to your feet and yet with hundreds of lovely houses to see.

Fondest memory: I miss the Brewery; it's food and ambience. I also miss the feeling of being in a busy ferry port.
