  • Stonehenge by the sea!

Ale Stenar is a magical place in Kåseberga, south east of Ystad itself. It is a large ship setting but no one knows what it was built for as the stones were in a bad condition when found and have had to be carefully restored. It looks like an astronomical setting since the whole monument is on a cliff by the sea, well placed for sun rises and...

  • Wallander's Favourite Cafe

As I was visiting Ystad as a result of seeing several Wallander films - Fridholfs was a must to visit. I had an enjoyable breakfast buffet - followed by a semlor (Shrove/Fat Tuesday fayre only). It was pleasant and all the customers seemed to be local - this was a first visit which took place in early February, so no tourists nor film crews.Since...

  • Get the peppersteak or the hamburger!

Located close to downtown Ystad, in Långgatan, within a wooden house with entrance from the yard lies a restaurant gem! If you come early there will not be so many people. • Brewery restaurant

In the old town maltings, a brewery has been set up and it belongs to my favourite establishments in Sweden just for the ambience. The brewery copper vats are centre pieces in the restaurant which itself is in a half timbered house - all very German looking. In the yard, surrounded by these lovely buildings, you can enjoy the food outdoors in...

  • The only seafood shop/fastfood...

Apparently, this is the first and the only fishmonger in the whole city of Ystad and it's been open for only 1 month (as of August 2008). You can grab a small seafood lunch there (there is only 1 table with 2 chairs) so it's intended mostly for take-away. The service is very friendly (happy to speak English) :-)If you want to eat fish, go there! I...

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Ystad is the perfect place for a stroll. It's too compact to do damage to your feet and yet with hundreds of lovely houses to see.

Fondest memory: I miss the Brewery; it's food and ambience. I also miss the feeling of being in a busy ferry port.
