Nordiska Kompaniet is known by it's initials and is a large department store situated on hamngatan. There is a good book department which includes works in english, and also a cafe.In the run up to christmas the windows are decorated with some amazing designs.
Swedish food shop
and everything else you would expect from a department store
What to buy: As a designer I'm always looking for nice paper products. Check out the ground floor shop where the food store is. Nice packets of paper in rich colors!
The food shop is great for those extra souvenirs. Plus those little wooden Swedish horses that come in red and blue.
This is a shopping mall with a little more exclusive shops, ex Gant, Boss, Ralph Lauren ect.ect.. And there is severar cafes and resturants there in case you get hungry.
Fore more pictures and information se my travelogues of NK and my video of NK.
What to buy: Check out the webpage.
NK (pronounced "En-Coor") is the short name for The Nordiska Kompaniet. This is the largest and most glamourous department store in the country. Inside, the cathedral-like atrium is very impressive, but not particularly Swedish. You could easily be in any large department store in any of Europe's major capital cities (Harrods in London or Galleries Lafayette in Paris, for example). However the supermarket on the lower-ground floor does have an excellent selection of Swedish and international produce.
What to buy: Hot Tip: Don't miss the pastry counter on the lower-ground floor. Here you'll find the best Swedish desserts in town.
The "Nordic Company", or NK as it is more generally known, is so famous that I do not really have to add it as a VT tip, with its famous logo on a pole on the roof, but I still feel my shopping tips aren't really complete unless I do. Today, NK is no longer a department store as such, but instead a store with lots of stores within. You will find a mix of clothes, gifts, jewellery, toys and lots more. On a more sad note, this is where Foreign minister Anna Lindh was stabbed some years ago. This was a deed by a madman, directed at a minister, so of course you need not be more concerned than elsewhere about your own safety when shopping here. I just added this information so you know in case you wander past someone looking solemn all of a sudden. NK is incredibly famous for its shop windows at Christmas and rightly so - children are mezmerised by all the moving images with fairy worlds, Santa's workshops and so on.
What to buy: Anything.
Allow hours for a visit to this store. It is absolutely beautiful and cutomer service is outstanding . You can find anything from gourmet foods to clothing to furniture. We found some unique super-soft stuffed animals and wonderful baby toys. The hosewares selection was full of beautifully designed merchandise. The cafe is a quiet oasis from the bustle of Stockholm streets.
Important tip: Restrooms are beautiful, stocked with anything you might need to freshen up, but have 5K ready.
The NK (pronounced "En Ko") is the largest and most famous deparment store of Sweden (like Harrods in the UK).
Some may remember a Swedish minister got killed in this very store.
The store can be seen from a long way as the NK has a large pole with a rotating NK logo on top of the roof.
What to pay: Naturally this is not one of the cheapest stores in Stockholm. Sightseeing is probably better than buying a lot.
Even if shopping is not your bag (get it?), a visit to NK is a worthwhile visit! It is a very large and elegantly appointed department store with many levels. I was not intending any disrespect by my comparing it to Macy's but it does have a similar feel but in a unique Swedish way, of course! ;-)
You can find nearly anything that you are looking for here and there are several areas that serve coffee, pastries, and lunch menu items. Sweden is famous for its glass making and there are some beautiful examples to be found here! Unfortunately, all the ones that impressed me the most were also the very most expensive ones... Why is that???
They had a very neat culinary section and I actually purchased some utensils, and believe it or not, sometimes I use them!
I think NK could easily be a "Must See" for any trip to Stockholm, but I put it here... When you visit you can decide for yourself! :-)
What to pay: Not the least expensive store in town, but I guess you have to pay for presentation qualities too, da?
NK is the most luxury shopping mall in the central of Stockholm. Here you can find six stores with all from cosmetic and clothes to food and music. NK was opened in 1902 and is probably the most famous department stores in Stockholm.
Don't miss the window display around christmas, it's really worth a visit.
This is also the place where the Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anna Lind sadly was stabbed to death in September 2003.
These are two good department stores in the city center.
NK is an upscale department store with lots of good names.
Ahlens City isn't as exclusive, but they have lots of nice clothes, especially for women.
This is a unique and very interesting department store. Classic style, Scandinavian and modern. Even if you do not plan to do any shopping, it worth to visit this department store and look a bit around.
Here at NK buliding you find not only Nordiska kompaniet but more then 100 stores. You find what you need and you make a real bargain here too. This place is nearly 100 year so you can say its a genuine "shopping mall".
