    Friends Arena

by HORSCHECK Updated Jan 14, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In October 2013 I and 3 friends of mine attended the football world cup qualifier match between Sweden and Germany, which took place in Stockholm's Friends Arena.

The retractable roof stadium is Sweden's national multipurpose arena with a capacity of 50.000 for sporting events and up to 65.000 for concerts. It was built between 2009 and 2012. In July 2013 it hosted the final of the UEFA Women's Euro.

The football match, which I saw ended with a 5:3 victory of Germany against Sweden (Attendance: 49.251). Germany was directly qualified for the 2014 Football World Cup in Brasil.

    Directions:
The Friends Arena is situated in Solna, which is a suburb just 5 km north of Stockholm. It can be reached from Stockholm's Central Station by train to Solna commuter station. Apart from that, the metro stops Solna Centrum and Näckrosen on line T11 are also in walking distance to the stadium.

    Blue saints.

by Dizzyhead Updated Jul 25, 2012

Blue Saints is a supporter group to Djurgårdens IF in football.

Equipment: To be a member to belong to them you dont need anything special, and my advise is that you have something wrong if you like this club, but I am not a doctor so I cant say that is the right diagnos.

    running

by iaint Written Jun 15, 2010

It is a very runner friendly city. Plenty of open space, and flat!

Yesterday (14-6-10) I ran about 20 minutes from my hotel in Birger Jarlgatan to the far side of Skansen. Another 20 minutes back.

Much of the way I was either on the waterfront or in the wooded streets of Djurgården. Loved it.

Equipment: Just the usual clapped out trainers...

    more hockey

by iaint Updated May 3, 2010

Our Thursday night game on that 2004 trip was at Södertälje - a town to the south west of the city, well know for building Scania trucks. An adventure. We took the suburban train to the end of the line and then a taxi to the arena.

It was a good game - although the home team lost 0:3 - with lots of NHL stars on show on each side. Hävelid for SSK. Kiprusoff, Zetterberg & Modin for Timrå.

At the time Södertälje was a top league team, but they drop down and pop back up from time to time.

Not a big crowd so between that and the home team losing, the atmosphere was not wonderful.

    Equipment: A sense of adventure...

Cash - taxis, admission, replica shirt...

    Nordic Walking

by Rupanworld Written Oct 20, 2008

Nordic walking (fitness walking with specially designed poles), like in the entire Scandinavia, is extremely popular in Sweden. So while in sweden, expect to see some people walking past you with their Nordic walking poles. Here's a picture of a woman walking past me. It is said that nordic walking can relieve back pains of back packers. Food for thought !!!!!

    Equipment: Walking poles

This is the kind of place where you can easily go get some beers with your friends, maybe some peanuts or pop corn snacks and watch sports on their big screen TV's. They also have a restaurant but we didn't try that.

Equipment: You can buy what you need in the nearby Old Town shop in the second picture :)

As this one Swedish chap told us, Sweden is really into soccer, which really showed in 2006 (a few weeks before the start of the World Championships of Soccer in Germany)! Old and young, men and women really got excited about it!!!

Well, to tell you the background of this picture:
we did stumble across these people who were participating in an advertisement being shot near Riddarholmen Church..... We had such a good laugh and enjoyed watching the shooting just as much as we would have enjoyed visiting the inside of the church! (or maybe even more.....)

In the Swedish highest division you have 3 teams from stockholm (AIK Stockholm, Hammarby and Djurgarden). Those 3 teams have a lot of fans and I'm told that the derby games are very nice to see! I have sympathy for AIK Stockholm and they play in Rasunda stadium we're most of the derbies are played!

    Soccer games

by daaaniel Updated Aug 10, 2003

There are three Stockholm soccer clubs playing in Allsvenskan: Djurgårdens IF, AIK and Hammarby IF. The quality of the Swedish league is, as you might know, questionable compared to the leagues in England, Spain, Italy, and Germany.

But if you have the opportunity to watch a derby -- do it! Derbys are played on the Råsunda stadium in Solna (catch the subway).

There will be at least 30 000 spectators and tifos like in southern Europe.

Check out then the games take place on:
    Svensk fotboll

The City of Stockholm has a particular responsibility in promoting culture and sports. Besides an extensive network of public libraries, the City manages and operates cultural centres, museums and galleries. It also operates hundreds of in- and outdoor sportsgrounds and playing fields.

    NFL Viewing

by cvsolfari Written Oct 22, 2002

If you want to catch the NFL while in Stockholm, the only game in town seems to be Reilly's sports pub on Sodermalm. Note that you need to make a reservation in order to get a table or else you'll end up standing for the whole evening. :-(

I saw this sticker some where in Stockholm, and that means that some one loves his team so much that he or she goes around and put stickers every where.
