Stockholm's Arlanda Airport is located about 40 km north of the city centre. There are frequent rail (Arlanada Express) and coach (Flygbussarna) services to the Cityterminalen. In 2004 a single train ticket was 180 SEK, whereas the coach was only 89 SEK.

We went from Stuttgart/Germany to Stockholm/Arlanda airport.
One thing you have to know is that Stockholm has 3 different airports: one is almost in the city, Arlanda is halfway between Stockholm and Uppsala and the Ryanair airport is even further away from the city. So if you plan your trip make sure you know which airport you will land at and depart from!
Arlanda airport has 5 different terminals, so it is a good thing if you know which terminal your flight leaves from, since the distances between the different terminals are quite large!

Arlanda airport is the main Swedish airport with most international and domestic flights.
There are four flight terminals at Arlanda.
Terminal 2 - International flights (BA, Finnair)
Terminal 3 - Domestic flights to smaller airports (Skyways)
Terminal 4 - Domestic flights to larger airports (SAS)
Terminal 5 - International flights
The fastest way to get to and from the airport is with the Arlanda Express train which takes 20 minutes between Stockholm City and the airport.
Arlanda Express
This train leaves every 15 minutes in both directions and a single trip cost 190 SEK (April 2005).
If you are not in such a hurry, you can instead take the busses.
Flygbussarna
The bus leaves outside each terminal, during peak hours every 10 minute. The 40 minute trip to Stockholm cost 89 SEK (November 2003).
If you want to you can also take a taxi, you will find the taxi stand outside each terminal. Make sure that you will get a fixed price, and you shall never pay more than 445 SEK to the central parts of Stockholm. (April 2005) From Stockholm to Arlanda some taxi companies have fixed price.
One taxi company that I can recommend is Metro Taxi +46 8 140 000. The operates in the north part of Stockholm, and with them you can get a fixed price of 350 SEK both from and to Arlanda. (April 2003)
Be aware of the fact that the main Taxi company, Taxi Stockholm (+46 8 150 000) is quite expensive. They take 445 SEK from Arlanda and between 475 SEK and 790 SEK from Stockholm depending on from where you go and how big car you need. (April 2005)

The main airport in the Stockholm area is of course Arlanda. But it's actually one airport much closer to the city, just some kilometers from the city center. The airport is called Bromma, and you can get here with busses from Stockholm Central station (20 minutes) or with taxi.
You can fly to Bromma from international destinations like Brussels, Århust and Copenhagen, and from domestic destinations like Malmö, Göteborg, Ängelholm, Trollhättan;, Visby and Umeå

Arlanda is Stockholm's main international airport with flights to many international and domestic locations. It is one of the main hubs for Scandinavian Airways.
There are plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and an internet cafe in the terminal buildings. The international terminal is currently being extended and if you are connecting to a domestic flight, it can be a long walk.
If you have to stay overnight, the Sky City hotel in the terminal is an ideal location.
Getting There
1. The Arlanda Express offers a quick link from Stockholm Central. Arlanda Express
2. Taxis are available from outside the terminal building. Prices to the centre are fixed at about 370sek but check before you go because our hotel at Globen was outside the centre so the price was 530sek.
2. Buses run frequently to the Stockholm Central. Check at the airport for prices and timetables.
NOTE: For any Star Alliance Gold Card holders. In their strive to improve customer service, SAS have closed the domestic lounge.
UPDATE: The domestic lounge has been re-opened but it is totally devoid of any facilities.

Arlanda airport has transportation options in various price ranges.
The fastest option in the express train called Arlanda Express. This train takes you from the airport to Stockholm central station is just 20 minutes. However, you need to pay SEK 240 / 460 (one-way/return) for the high speed. You can find some special prices for weekend trips. Trains leave about every 15 minutes.

The express bus operated by Flygbussarna is still quite fast, but much more affordable. The trip takes about 45 minutes with some extra stops in northern Stockholm, terminating at the central bus terminal (Cityterminalen) next to the central train station. Buses leave every 15 minutes, tickets cost SEK 119/219 (one-way/return), but you can save some money by booking in advance online. Note that cash payments are not accepted on the buses, you need to pay by credit card instead.

The next option is to catch a local train from Arlanda to central Stockholm. This route takes about 40-50 minutes, and you will need to change trains at Upplands Väsby. Trains leave every 30 minutes. Tickets cost SEK 100 (one-way), or if you already have a regular local transportation ticket or pass, you need to pay a supplement of SEK 60.

The cheapest option is to catch a local bus and train to Stockholm. For that, get on bus 583 at any of the terminals towards Märsta station, and change there to the local train called Pendeltåg to central Stockholm. The journey takes about 60 minutes, buses and trains leave every 15 minutes. A single ticket costs SEK 60 (one-way), but if you buy a 1-, 3- or 7-day pass at the airport, you can already use that for this trip, without paying anything extra.

This small airport is about 100 km south of Stockholm. It has very well organized bus traffic from airport and you will be in the city centre for about one hour. It is served low cost airlines such as Ryanair, Wizzair.

Step into the unknown, flying with Norwegian Air Shuttle. Don't be fooled by the name. It has hubs in Sweden, Denmark and Poland, as well as Norway.
Non-stop from Edinburgh to Arlanda. About £120 return. On the outbound flight, we left early and arrived 30 minutes ahead of schedule.
Easy check in, easy boarding (security a pain in the butt - 15 minute queue - but that's the airport, not the airline).
They don't do internet check in. You can pay a bit extra to have an allocated seat.
You buy your food on board - looked good and not overpriced.

We flew from Scotland to Stockholm with Ryanair who use Skavsta airport. Its further out of the city but flights were very cheap. Its also a nice small airport that you couldn't get lost in if you tried! Always a plus in my book. There are Ryanair run coaches to the City Terminalen bus station. Its 150 SEK return but they were running a 2 for 1 offer so it ended up only costing us 75SEK each
