Bromma, Västerås & Skavsta

Flying to Bromma, Västerås or Skavsta [the latter two operating flights by Ryanair might be cheaper, but the rest of the ride might be a bit of a problem. The prices for the bus tickets are about the same, but the travel time is different.

Bromma is a close suburb of Stockholm, so you can go to the Metro station Brommaplan & take a bus from there. It's a smaller airport, but it's a lot closer that the others. Västerås is a small airport about two hours' ride away from Stockholm. If your destination's Uppsala, it might be OK, but unless there is a super cheap ticket, I wouldn advise flying somewhere closer. Skavsta is the same, located near the city of Nyköping, a two hours' ride away from Stockholm. There are buses to Linköping, Norrköping, Södertälje aso. & a one-way ticket costs 130 SEK, while a return tickets costs 199 SEK [unfortunately there are no discounts].

There's a lot of places to fly to & a lot of options to choose from, so plan your trip in advance if you don't wanna find yourself in the middle of nowhere in the middle of night... ;)

Besides Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Stockholm has several other airports.

Stockholm Bromma, Stockholm Skavska and Stockholm Västerås.

Stockholm Bromma is actually the only airport in Stockholm itself (Arlanda is situated in the town of Arlanda). And has a handfull of flights into Europe. The largest operator is Malmö Aviation. Other operators include Skyways and Swedflights.

Stockholm Skavsta is located in the city of Nyköping 50km south of Stockholm. Ryanair, Transavia and WizzAir provide low-cost flights to several destinations in Europe. Finnair has flights to Boston and Helsinki. SweFly operates flights into Lahore and Bangkok.

Stockholm Västerås is located in Västerås, about 70km west of Stockholm. Ryanair flies to London Luton from here and SAS to Kopenhage.

SAS B737 at Arlanda Airport

Stockholm Arlanda is the main airport in Stockholm and has frequent operations to all mayor destinations within Europe and a very extensive network throughout Sweden and Scandinavia.

Also several flights into America/Africa and Asia are available from here. Most of the mayor carriers fly from Arlanda Airport.
Low-cost airlines serving Arlanda Airport include: FlyNordic, Germanwings, Sterling, Snowflake, FlyME, Scandjet, FlyDBA and Norwegian Air Shuttle.

To Stockholm with Ryanair

small airport in the middle of nowhere

We booked our trip with Ryanair from Brussels-Charleroi.

You will not exactly land in Stockholm but in Skvasta which is 100 km from Stockholm. I suggest that you bay tickets for the coach from the automat inside the arrival hall WHILE waiting for your luggage because you will end up in an interminable queue and miss the first buses. The next ones will be 1 hour later only.

Taking me away from Sweden

We flew to Arlanda, Stockhlolm from Heathrow with SAS (Scandinavian Airlines). The flight was on time and they served standard airline food - what more can you ask really?
Oh there was a really cute baby in front of us who amused us for a while - like babies do. He was sweet and happy and didn't whinge and whine the whole way there - and he was being looked after soley by his dad who made a fantastic job of amusing him! This sort of service probably isn't available on every flight though :)

SAS provided the best fare when it came to choosing which airline to fly with - I think they had an offer on at the time.

Vasteras Airport

I flew to Vasteras on Ryanair from Stansted and overall I'd have to recommend it within reason.

I've heard it getting bad press for the distance and cost of the airport transfer. And yes, it's not great that you land an hour and a half away from the city and have to hand over a pile of money to get from the airport into Stockholm. BUT

I got a very cheap flight (ý35.22 return including taxes) so even once I add on the SEK199 for the airport transfer coach, I'm nowhere near the cost of a direct flight from the UK to Arlanda.. My time is precious (I only had a weekend) and the transfer did eat into it a little, but for me it was a price worth paying for a dirt cheap flight, and I'd do it again next weekend if I could.

One thing I'm not sure about though. When the flight landed two coaches took us into Stockholm. For the transfer back I got onto the first coach as I'd been at Cityterminalen for ages. But the coach was full and there were people left at the bus station. I don't know whether a second coach came or whether they had to get an expensive taxi, and I'd rather never be in the position to find out!

And the price of my flight went up considerably after I booked it. If I'd had to pay ý150 for the flight then put up with the transfer I probably wouldn't be so complimentary.

From the UK Stockholm is served by the budget airline RyanAir flying from "London" Stansted. The flights can be excellent value for money but note that this carrier flies into 2 airports (Skavsta and Vasteras) that are over an hour outside of Stockholm. The cost of a return ticket via the airport bus to the central station in Stockholm is around £15.

There are two main airports in Stockholm. The biggest and the main international airport is called Arlanda by the small town it where it actually resides. Most major airlines have Arlanda as their destinations. There 5 terminals in Arlanda, as well as SkyCity - shopping paradise with restaurants and even a Systembolaget (state-run alcohol store).

Bromma, which is just in outskirts of the Stockholm, and not even in the last zone of local traffic, is mainly the domestic airport (though there are rumours that it will soon become international again)

Skavsta is situated about 100 km to the south of Stockholm, and you will find yourself there if you fly with RyanAir. Cheapness of flight tickets has its drawbacks. You will get to central station with almost two hours on bus from Skavsta.

There are shuttle busses between all three airports and central station in Stockholm. You can recognize those buses by big caption saying "Flygbussarna".

Arlanda or Skavsta - the airports at hand

Coming to Stockholm? Coming by plane? Here is how to get into the city:

The two airports close to Stockholm are Arlanda and Skavsta. Arlanda is just north-west of Stockholm, som 40 kilomotres, and this is of course the biggest airport in Sweden, with both domestic and international departures and arrivals. Arlanda looks like a construction site, and is constantly the subject of alterations or extensions. It is a quite manageable airport though, you will find your way around.
To get into Stockholm from Arlanda there are basically three choices: taxi, train or bus. Bus will be the cheapest, about 7 US$, train costs a bit more, but is faster; 20 minutes compared to 40 minutes by bus.
The buses depart from just outside the entrance gates. Trains are accessed below ground level, you can follow the signs or ask your way. Taxis run from just outside the entrance. Buses and trains to Stockholm are really frequent.

Skavsta is located south of Stockholm and the bus ride here takes some 80 minutes. Buses depart from the airport to Stockholm and vice versa quite often and the fare is about 20US$.
