This museum was the first one I visited as a study trip from Swedish school in 2003. It describes the origin of Stockholm and its evolution during these ages. The museum shows artifacts and findings from excavations made in Helgeandsholmen between 1978 and 1980 and built around some ancient ruins, like the tunnel at the entrance. Some of the things you'll see here are part of the city wall from 1530, Riddarholmsskeppet (the one in the pictures - if my memory doesn't fail me), Galgbacken - where thieves and other violent people were punished. Free admittance. The museum is located originally under Norrebro but since there's restoration works being done on the bridge, they moved to a local at Kulturhuset.

I visited the the Östasiatiska museet on a real autumn day. I had high expectations of the museum and was therefor rather disappointed that is was much smaller then I expected. The part that I really loved was the collection of Buddhist and Indian sculptures. I just wished that there was more material like this to be seen in this museum. The museum houses several exhibitions about the Far East (China, Korea and Japan) but also India and South East Asia. They have several changing exhibitions. At the time of my visit it was about Japanese Tattoo Art. The museum is not only a 'museum' but also a meeting place for those who are interested in Asia. The museum organises courses and workshop like Kalligrafi, Ikebana and Origami. In the photos you can see some of the works you can see in the Östasiatiska museet / The Museum of Eastern Antiquities. Östasiatiska museet by sim1 Let's go back inside and discover another one of Stockholms museums: The Museum of Eastern Antiquities (Östasiatiska museet). This museum is wonderfully located at Skeppsholmen. You have some lovely views over the city from here; right in front, on the other side of the water is the Royal Palace. The island of Skeppsholmen not only houses the Östasiatiska museet but also the Modern Museum and the Arkitekturmuseet, all in walking distance. The museum is housed in a historical buidling dating back to 1699. The museum is unique in the way that it has one of the foremost collections of Chinese art outside Asia. Located The Östasiatiska museet is located at Tyghusplan, Skeppsholmen, Stockholm Getting here Bus 65 to af Chapman, or Subway Kungsträdgården Opening hours Tue 11-20, Wed - Sun 11-17, Mon closed. Entrance fee 60:- SEK for adults, free entrance for all under 20 years of age. Leave a Comment

The Modern museum in Stockholm was reopened recently after renovation to the house itself. The museum is on Skeppsholmen island in central Stockholm. This is the location for many of the museums in town. Walking here from the central station will take you about 20 minutes. Moderna museet has a collection that it exhibits, but also hosts temporary shows. In summer of 2004 there is an exhibition called Svenska Hjärtan (Swedish hearts), about mulitculturalism in Sweden, which I enjoyed a lot! This is not paintings and such but rather modern type of art with lots of installtions and so on. The museum has a large bookstore that also sells souvenirs, and there is a restaurant/café with a pretty view over the waters. But it is a bit expensive. But hey, the entrance to the museum is free, so you have some kronors to spend!! Leave a Comment Address: Skeppsholmen, StockholmDirections: Walk by Grand Hotel and the National museum, then cross the bridge. Now you are on Skeppsholmen, Signs will direct you to the museum entrance on your left side.Website: http://www.modernamuseet.se

The Etnografiska museet (Museum of Ethnography) is located next to the Tekniska Museet (Museum of Science and Technology) and the Sjöhistoriska museet (National Maritime Museum). This museum seems to be the smallest of the three, but there is enough to see here to keep you busy for at least an hour or probably much more. The museum has collections from Asia, Africa, Australia, Oceania, America, and Greenland. What you will find here is lots about the folklore, beliefs and practices of different cultures around the world. Most of the objects in the museum date back to the 19th and 20th century and the focus is mainly on Africa and the original inhabitants of North America (during my visit). I have to admit that I have a bit of a mixed feeling about this museum. I think the part that bothered me the most was the lack of light in the museum. Some areas were so dark that it was hard to see the objects that were on display, let alone to read the signs beside them telling what it was about. I also lost the 'logic' in the museum from time to time, being among the indians one minute and only a few metres on I was back in Africa, loosing the sense what the chronicle order and relevance between the displays was. BUT at the same time I have to admit that there were some really nice parts of the museum that I enjoyed very much! I think the part that I liked most were a little corner about Teotihuacán and the more extensive exposition about Benin. A nice thing about the museum is that they have their own restaurant focussing on food of different cultures around the world. I'll tell you a bit more about that in my restaurant tip. Opening hours Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 10:00 - 17:00 Wednesday: 10:00 - 20:00 Saturday and Sunday 11:00-17:00 Closed on Monday Entrance fee 60 SEK for adults and Leave a Comment Address: Djurgårdsbrunnsvägen 34Phone: 08-519 550 00Directions: Enjoy a walk along the waterside Djurgårdsbrunnsviken until you come to the Etnografiska museet or take bus 69 from "Centralen" to busstop "Museivägen".Website: www.etnografiska.se Other Contact: info@etnografiska.se

Cosmonova by sim1 If you have some time, you really should visit Cosmonova, which is located in the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Cosmonova is the largest planetarium in Sweden, and one of the most modern in the world. But it is not only a planetarium; it is also Sweden's only Imax Theatre. And a fantastic theatre that is! The screen is enormous and dome-shaped; 760 square meters in area, 11 meters high, and 23 meters in diameter. There are always a couple of films showing at the same time, so you can choose what you would like to see. The films are in Swedish but I got a headset so I could hear the movie translated in English. Don't forget to ask for it though when you go here. I don't have any photos of the Cosmonova, so I posted one of my own 'bug' photos. Hahaha, think of seeing all kinds of bugs in huge size getting close to you... arghhh.... hahaha, I think I will choose another movie instead ;-) As the films are constantly changing, you best take a look at their website to see the current films Tickets for the Cosmonova are 85 SEK each. Take a look at their website for more information about admission fee Getting there: Subway Universitetet, Bus 40. By car; head north and pass Roslagstull. Continue on Norrtäljevägen (E18) and exit at Frescati. Opening hours: All year: shows Tue-Sun each hour between 10-19 Admission fee: Adult 75 SEK, 5-15 years 50 SEK, Child less than 5 years is not allowed Leave a Comment Address: Frescativägen 40Phone: 08-519 551 30Directions: At the Swedish Museum of Natural History / Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet

Medeltidsmuseum (The Museum of Medieval Stockholm) by sim1 The location of the Medeltidsmuseum is a bit 'unusual' but so appropriate. The museum has been built around some archaeological remains which were discovered around 1978-1980. The most important of these discoveries was finding part of the old town wall from around 1530. You can see parts of this wall inside the museum. When you enter the Medeltidsmuseum, you start by walking through an arched tunnel from 1642, which brings you to the 'antechamber'. In this room you can see a number of objects relating to church and the monastery, like the one in the picture. This is a crucifix from the 15th century, which probably used to be in the 'triumphal hall' of the Storkyrkan. Leave a Comment

Paying taxes by sim1 This last picture made me smile... hmmm... we don't seem to be the only ones that have to put up with paying taxes, lol, they knew all about it at that time as well! This is a list from 1460 mentioning the people that are liable to taxes and how much they have to depending on their profession. If you click on the picture you can read the list for yourself. It is in Swedish, but maybe you can recognize some professions. There were a lot of fisherman (fiskare) and carpenters (timmermän) in the city at that time and they had to pay 2 ½ öre. But a student (djäknar) was off worst of them all as he had to pay 22 öre! Opening hours: From Sept until Jun: Tue - Sun 11- 16, Wed 11 - 18 closed on Mondays. Guided tours year round in Swedish 13:00 From Jul until Aug Mon - Sun 11- 16, Wed 11- 18, guided tours in English daily at 2 pm. Entrance fee: Free entrance CURRENT INFORMATION From 15 June, 2007 the museum will temporarily be housed in Kulturhuset, at Sergels torg. The Norrbro (the North Bridge) is being renovated, forcing the museum (which is located under the bridge) to temporarily move to the Kulturhuset. The museum is expected to open in the late autumn of 2009 or the spring of 2010 at its normal location of Strömparterren. Leave a Comment

Here are some more sculptures that you can see in the same room: In the first picture you can see a statue of "Erik den Helige" (Eric IX of Sweden / Erik Jedvardsson) or in English also called Erik the Lawgiver or Eric the Saint. He was king of Sweden from 1150 to 1160 and still the patron saint of Stockholm, depicted in the city's coat of arms.. People seemed to have clearly different opinions about this King. The pope for instance used a pretext that Eric was a drunk who died as result of fight in a group of drunks. But in the area of Svealand people believed in a miracle after Erik's death, since a fountain sprang from the earth where the king's head fell after being chopped off. In the second picture you can see a sculpture of Anna, Virgin Maria's mother, who was a popular saint during the late Middle Ages. Anna was often depicted sitting with Maria on her knee, who in her turn was holding the baby Jesus. In the third picture you can see St.George and the Dragon. In the previous tips about the Storkyrkan I wrote a bit about the legend and its meaning to Stockholm of St.George and the Dragon. In the museum you can see a whole variety of things. You can see old building techniques, see and read about the origin of Stockholm and its early development, Medieval houses (you can even walk into one to see its inside), the harbour and everything involving trade and fishing during that time, objects of daily life, crime and punishment, and the remains of a 22 meter long ship.
