There is a night train about 2300hrs from Stockholm to Oslo in Norway. ( check days of running ). Comfortable sleeping cabins. Gets to Oslo about 0700hrs. If you are travelling overland and sea., you can spend the day in Oslo., before continuing to Stavanger for ferry to Newcastle. A bit tiring but O.K. if you can sleep well on trains. I can. ---- Please note . 2012 now no ferry to Newcastle ---
Lots of public transport available. This train is the local train # 21 which runs northeast of Stockholm. I took the metro as far as I could and then walked across the bridge and went for a good walk. Took the train back. My 3 day transportation card was accepted on this train.
Main Railway Station in Stockholm
Sweden has a highly efficient rail network spanning the entire country. Visitors travel smoothly and comfortably across the countryside on some of Europe’s most modern trains.
The high-speed Swedish train, the X 2000, can travel at speeds of over 200 kph (125 mph) on all the major routes, and provides the highest standards of rail comfort, such as radio and music outlets in all the seats. In first class compartments, passengers are served meals in their seats, and in second class are served in the bistro coach.
