Know about this?
Sweden is not the place to visit if you're on a budget, unless you're planning to lose some weight. Shopping for food ain't no fun either, because it's like being in an English small town where the only choice is Spar & Co-op - i.e; poor selection & not a bargain to be found on any shelf. Even in Stockholm, supposedly the cheapest place for eating, supermarkets aren't in the business of giving a good deal, even on local products...

I add this one under warning as not to confuse anyone. First, this PUB is not a pub as many of you might think but a department store. 2nd, in this department store prices are way beyond what I consider good barging, I think that charging over 200$ for a jeans coming from the "east" is a total of a rip off. So in short, stay away from this place.
Accommodation prices are fierce!!
Just be warned that if you are someone, a bit like me!, that just arrives and hopes for the best then be aware that even though Stockholm is pretty expensive - eg a dorm bed which is sharing with others and that could be mixed gender or noisy children! can be the same price (about 30-50 euro) as we could pay for a nice single room at a hostel or even worse at a nice hotel somewhere else in Europe - that places can be totally booked out pretty early - so do have a bit of a plan when it comes to visiting Stockholm of where you want to stay and getting in on the best deals before they book out.
As added to those prices, unless youve brought your own sheets or sleeping bag, that linen is not included in the price! and can be what I would regard as very expensive - the price of buying a new sheet! I had to pay 10 euro at one place just to hire sheets for the night. So if you are staying for a while its well worth bringing your own sheet and definitely bring or buy a towel.
Some places you are expected to do your own cleaning of the room, empty bins etc and sign a contract that you will be pay a fee for cleaning if its not cleaned!
Hostels can still be very good value - usually clean and well provided with facilities - as many families travel and rely on staying at youth hostels
Before I flew over in August - which is peak season - before booking my flight I phoned a number of places to set up a place stay and actually couldnt find anywhere to stay so I couldnt book my flight to arrive when I had preferred!

Renting a Car
Renting a car will cost you a fortune.
Having said that it opens up a few options, particularly in terms of getting out to some of the outer parts of Stockholm and getting to Upsala.
So if you plan to rent a car - make sure you make the most of it.

Plan your spendings
Look at your bank account statement carefully before going to Sweden. Although not the most expensive country in Europe, Sweden can disappoint your consumer instincts. Especially it is about alcohol - prices for 'fire-water' are ridiculous. You can also buy only 3.5%-vol. beer from usual store - stronger drinks must be purchased in specialized stores.
Tax-free shop in airports could definitely help you when you go to Sweden, but unfortunately I don't know how many alcohol is allowed to get in with you. I am not so active alcohol drinker, so 1 bottle of liquor was allowed - for more information ask local authorities.
Avoid any far right skinheads...
Avoid any far right skinheads you may see - and beware of your wallet emptying faster than you expect. The city is very expensive - at up to €30 for moderate lunch and €7.50 for hostel breakfast the costs mount up very quickly
