Unfortunately the museums in Uppsala don't have the best opening times, so if you want to plan your trip while still at home check out Uppsala's museums (main site).
This site is a list of all the museums with their addresses, opening times, phone numbers and websites. To call for information add the prefix +46 to the phone numbers listed on the site.
Here I put some of my observations and reflections about Uppsala. Obviosuly they are the result of my short stay there (in August 2006) and they are connected with my personal background and fascinations. But maybe you can confirm some of them :)
1. Sunday, 8 pm - I left my luggage in the hotel and I'm going to find some restaurant. And ... all the places are closed. At the end I found chinese bar with terrible food and bad service. This is really surprise that in 200 000 city the nightlife is limited to several beer-pubs and one restaurant. And maybe It was that because of holidays time (the end of August) and lack of students?
2. In Uppsala you can find only pubs for some students' organisations. So don't be surprised that the pub guard will stop you at the doors.
3. The city transport in Upsalla is perfectly developed. And almost every driver speak English :)
Seeing all the historic things in town, like the Cathedral, the University areas, the old university Library 'Carolina Rediviva', the Viking remnants, the old parts of town and the historic area of 'Gamla Uppsala'.
These are the things that set Uppsala apart from other Swedish cities and you can not afford to miss it. But do walk along the pedestrian strees in the town center, check out the (albeit small) shopping possibilities.
Another great feature of Uppsala, as of many Swedish towns is the abundance of coffee houses. Rereading my tips I can see that this has influenced me to constantly recommend still another café. Follow my advice, or just pop into the nearest one on a whim, having a coffee, or as we say in Sweden, having a fika, is a great way to pass the time!
Fondest memory: Being away from Uppsala, I miss the academic atmosphere in town. A LOT of the activities center around the university faculties, and even if you are not a student, there are many events to visit...!
Money Exchange in Uppsala is right NEXT to the city Tourist Information Office. So, i would recommend you to come directly to this place as u arrive in the city.
Fondest memory: This is right there on Fyris Torg.
I loved this building and it's colours. When i went near then i got to know that it is pretty build one. but in the whole city you will find buildings which are very different from others and typically swedish in style and architecture.
Fondest memory: To take the photo of this building while it was raining heavily.
Uppsala is a small medieval age town at around 1 hours drive from Stockholm City. It is famous for it's Stone Age ruins and having Scandanavia's Oldest University.
Fondest memory: Walking through the old town and seeing the building.
Favorite thing: The Tourist office is located on Fyristorg, street Sysslomansgatan in central Uppsala. From Central Square, walk down to the river, cross it and turn left walk a block, there it is. You can see it in the picture in the right corner. The exchance office is next door.
If you're arriving by train from Stockholm and want to see Gamla Uppsala, TAKE THE BUS! I tried walking there and was on the highway going both directions before finally catching the local city bus. Gamla Uppsala is definitely worth a half day to soak in the place where Sweden really began.
Fondest memory: Walking through the city, I stumbled across a small stream flowing through the city. Luckily, the sun was playing peek-a-boo with the clouds and I snapped the main picture to my Uppsala page there.
IKEA is a very nice store and it´s pretty cheap. and is has a nice resturant. Go for a walk along the river and look at the boats. There is a nice park by the river (stadsparken). Uppsala is a city of many students and there are many different librarys, the nicest ands oldest is Carolina Redviva.
Fondest memory: Café fågelsång by the swanpond (svandammen) is a nice place to get a cup of coffee. Away from Uppsala I miss the libraries.
Favorite thing: Walking around the city is great. You can feel that this city is very old. The buildings look great too!! On the pic you can see a part of Uppsala, with in the middle the Uppsala Cathedral.
