  • The store is small... - Uppsala
    The store is small...
    by Maline

Nyboda Läder, is a store specializing in hand-made leather products, mostly from reindeer-leather, but it also has knit-wear and some local jewellry.
It is a bit off from the shopping area, but not far. Still I think it is a great place for tourists who want something Swedish to bring home.

    How to get there:
From central square Stora Torget, walk along the pedestrian street towards the Forum Galleria. Keep on past the galleria (mall) and one or two blocks on. Just before the pedestrian area ends the shop is on your right side. Good luck! Also, if you keep on to the end of the pedestrian street, you see the train station on your left, further down.

Here you get leather bags, belts, bracelets or rucksacks. Or mittens and a cap.

It is not cheap. A rucksack of normal everyday size hand made of reindeer leather might cost 100 us dollars. But smaller things are cheaper, and they last forever. My bag has hung on for thirteen years now...

  • What do tourists who come to Uppsala buy?

This I asked a girl working in the tourist office, which also has a gift shop. Here's what she said, see if you recognize yourself...:

Germans buy anything with moose-motives. There are fake road-signs, but also other items with moose print.

Other Europeans often buy craft, glass, leather or iron stuff.

People from eastern Europe often buy china collectors items such as memory plates, mostly with gold linings.

Americans buy crafts, and many buy towels with the Swedish Dala-horse printed. Lots of Americans are Swedish-descendants, she said.

Japanese tourists often buy wood craft or linen cloth.

Other Asian tourists opt for china plates or crafts.

Those, she said were obvious shopping patterns she had observed while working in the tourist office. Do you think it's correct?

On my way to the tourist information office i found this littel shop and it was very interesting because it had nice local things on display. Unfortunately, it was raining quite a lot and i was in a rush to reach tourist information office, so i couldn't look from inside. But i would like to recommend it to you.

As in most parts of the world you can buy massproduced fabricmade stuff in Sweden to.....but if you want something that is very local, go to Ulva (10 km north of Uppsala).
Here it is an "artvillage" where they make chrystal, leatherstuff and other handmade things. The chrystal is not cheap, but it is very beatiful and this is the only place you can buy it....also it is an artmarcet in september every year. There is just allowed to sell handmade products made in Sweden there, it has become very popular.
Also this is an recreation area during the summertime, where you can have an picnic or just relax near the river and the waterfall.
You can also have an barbecue here, as they have built a grill for public, just bring what you want to eat (and drink)!

    It is not cheap....

  • Fredrikslund is a farm that grows potatoes and the most delicious strawberries I've had. By Midsummer weekend this place is open and with a big line because of the freshness and deliciousness of their products.

They also import Scottish single malt whiskey and sell clothes.

Kvarnen: Shopping centre in central Uppsala

  • There is a small but well-appointed shopping centre right in the middle of Uppsala city centre.
There are about 30 shops in there including Clas Ohlson, Gallerix, a large ICA Supermarket, Mc Donald's, a photo shop, several clothes shops and at least one cafe/restaurant.
