Fyris River, Uppsala
The Fyris river runs through the city and as it does so, it has meant a great setting for many restaurants and cafés. One of the more famous places is Flustret, a castle like dance restaurant which has entertained generations of Uppsalians. The area below the cathedral quarters as shown in the picture is particularly nice, with the old Mill islet with its university water mill from the 18th century which today houses the main part of Upplands Museum with local history and art. The river is also deep and broad enough to take smaller passenger ships which can cruise down to Lake Mälaren in the south.
The University Watermill is by river Fyrisån, just below the cathedral. Today the Uppland County Museum is housed in the old watermill. But from the 13th century until 1946 there was an active mill here. The white building has been there since the 18th century.
River Fyris has an important significance in Uppsala City. All the main 'Happening Areas' are close to it & also the famous monuments and buildings.
A walk along with the Fyris river is very relaxing.
Unfortunately the day i went to Uppsala was not a good one for me because it was cloudy and rainy. But still i made full use ot it and did almost all of the must see and do activities. But i think if you have a walk in summer along with the banks of River Fyris then that would be soooo nice in comparision with walking there along the river on a rainy day as i did in early winters !!!
On your way, you will see beautiful old buildings with typical swedish art which is worth seeing.
What would Uppsala be without its own River - Fyris? The river even stars in Swedish movies. In Ingmar Bergman's movie Fanny & Alexander (1982), several locations shot in the movie shows Fyris river in action.
Walk beside the river here is a great tip, many smal shops and cafe to visit here and pubs.
Places beside the river:
Restaurants & Café
Saluhallen, Flustret to restaurant, Domtrappkällaren ( realy a good place), Mekong vid Fyrisån
Not far from the train station in Uppsala is the River Fyris. Along the banks are cafes, hotels, shops, parks and gardens. I was there in August and the flowers across the bridges and canal where gorgeous. Uppsala is a delightful small clean city.
A river runs through the city. The banks of the river are all finished in cement and bridges cross it frequently. As you can see there is even a fountain in the middle of the river!
A picture is always worth a thousand words.
Uppsala is a 'do not miss' city in Sweden. Especially in August.
