The Tourist booth and bike lending by Rojo72 From late spring to early automn (about mid may to late august or early september) you can borrow a bike for FREE at the tourist booth beside the city Square, in front of the "Ticket" travel agency. They only ask some kind of proof of identity (not sure what goes and what doesn't but your Passport number and name would probably do) and then you can use it for as long as you like during that day. Karlstad Central Station by Rojo72 Karlstad is situated on the Stockholm-Oslo railway line, just about in the middle of it. Unfortunately there are far fewer trains than before but you can still go between the two capitals. Tickets can be purchased from the national railway line, SJ. The train station is situated right in the city centre, a short walk from hotels like Plaza, Comfort Inn, Stadshotellet and many others. With a minutes walk you are right on teh shopping street in Karlstad and with even a shorter walk you'll reach the first pub, The Woolpack Inn. (See a nightlife tip for that). You should also take a minute or two to admire the architecture of the station itself, which is one of the prettier buildings in the city. Leave a Comment

city bus in Karlstad by Rojo72 There is no underground or anything like it in Karlstad as the city is too small to have any such. Nor are here any trams. The public transportation system mainly consists of buses and the system of lines is well built. The local buses that cover Karlstad and it's different local urban areas (such as Kronoparken with the University, Norrstrand and Våxnäs which are all part of the main Karlstad) but not outer urban areas like Ulvsby or Molkom some 10-20 km away all start at the main square and goes circlewise. All buses heading to the eastern parts of the city start at the NORTH side of the square facing east and all those heading to the western parts of the city starts on the SOUTH side heading west. The are large digital boards telling you when your bus will be arriving. There are far more buses during mon-fri from about 6 AM to abput 7 PM than the rest of the time. The regional buses all start at the main bus terminal in Karlstad, which can be found at the west end of Drottninggatan. There is a stop for some of the local buses there too. It would take about 10-15 minutes to walk in a normal pace between the two starting points. All the timetables for these buses, as well as for the local buses in nearby cities such as Kristinehamn can be reach through the web site provided. Leave a Comment

The Godess of Peace by Rojo72 It was in Karlstad that the peace treaty between Sweden and Norway was signed in 1905, a treaty that turned Norway into an independent country. In memory of this people from the COunty of Värmland raised the Monument "The Godess of Peace" on the city Square in 1955, in memory of the peaceful dissolvment of the Swedish-Norwegian Union. It also has the inscription "Wars gives birth to hate between peoples, peace bringeth understanding". The actual treaty was signed in the house of the Godtemplars in karlstad, a house which nothern side faces the Square, ie just south of the square, to the "left" in the picture here. The museum seen from the southeast by Rojo72 *** For immediate publication: The Museum of Värmland has been elected "Museum of the year 2005" in Sweden*** As mentioned on my home page the Museum of Värmland is one of the more famous attractions in Karlstad. It consists of two buildings, the older one very old and the new one built in the 1990's. There is an aisle indoors between the two. In the new building you will find the standing exhibition of the history of Värmland, called "I the herule" after an scripture mentioning the herules "I am the herule, I write runes" or something like that. The exhibition covers all of Värmland's history from the oldest mesolithic and neolithic stone age to today. You will find stone axes, bronze swords, old garments and some things from a typical home in Karlstad or Värmland in the 1950's or so, just to mention a very few things. The new Building also hosts all "come and go"-exhibitions, different from month to month. In the new building you will find the art exhibitions. Entrance is 40 SEK per adult. The stone bridge, completed in 1797. by Rojo72 The Stone Bridge, or formally the Eastern Bridge was completed in 1797 and is the longest stone bridge in Sweden and to my knowledge in Europe. It was originally built as a way out of the city, but today it is situated just about in the middle of it, binding together the two urban living areas of Haga and Hagaborg/Norrstrand For the moment only city buses may cross the bridge, but there is talk about opening it for pedestrians. And even if it isn't it's still worth watching (and maybe secretly walk over...) and a sure thing for your photo album Leave a Comment Directions: Estern river branch, between Hagaborg and Haga

Alster's Manor by Rojo72 Alsters Herrgård, Alster Manor was the birthplace (1860) of Swedish 19th century poet Gustaf Fröding, famous for his deep, thoughtful and often dark peoms about love, but also for some very famous lyrics that have been put to music later in the 20th century. He had a harsh life, never any luck with love and was always somewhat mentally ill. The manor still stands in its original place in beautiful green surroundings a few miles from central Karlstad. I'll put some photos of it online soon! Open: Feb-April, Sept-dec: First weekend every month, sat-sun 12-16. May-Aug: Daily 11-18. Entrance fee: To the guidance of the manor on Saturdays at 14.00 hours 40SEK, the rest of the manor free of charge. Apart from going by car as described below you may also want to go by bicycle, there's a very pretty gravel and dirt-track path to the manor, about 5 km. Leave a Comment

The Karlstad Theatre by Rojo72 Karlstad Theatre is probabably the most beautiful building in the city with its white-washed 19th century walls. They give nationwide famous sets of well-known plays and musicals. This automn they will show "West side story" for example. This theatre could be considered the more "upper-level" theatre in town, as opposed to Scala theatre which hosts more "light" entertainment and plays, such as comedies, music events and cabarets. Leave a Comment Address: SandbäcksgatanDirections: Just beside the west bridge on Sandbäcksgatan
