Bergvik shopping mall: Värmland's largest mall

    by Rojo72 Updated Apr 17, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Bergvik, to the east of Karlstad centre, quite close to Skutberget and Bomstad Campings was originally the place for OBS, a part of the cooperative chain "Konsum". OBS can be found all over the country now and is always a huge place with all kinds of products, from food to lawn-mowers.

Today it is a huge mall with around 15-20 different stores, like OBS, Expert (home electonics), Intersport and Stadium (sports clothes and stuff), Werner & Werner (kitchen stuff and appliances), Fýrjestad BK support shop (replicas and such of Fýrjestad Elite League hockey club), Systembolaget (alcohol) and lots and lots of clothes stores and other stuff.

What to buy: Anything you want! A CD, a pair of jeans, a basket ball, a new TV set, a bicycle, toys, a bottle of Lagavulin...

    A small part of Bergvik

    Systembolaget: Alcohol? Only at Systembolaget

    by Rojo72 Written May 22, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sweden wouldn't be Sweden without its alcohol monopoly. You can't buy anything stronger than 3,5% strong beer in ordinary stores, everything stronger is ONLY sold at Systembolaget. On the other hand they've got almost anything you can wish for and very well-educated staff too.

In Karlstad there are two Systembolag, one in the city center on Drottninggatan, and one in the large Bergvik mall to the east of town (near Skutberget).

The opening hours are the same all over Sweden, from around 10 AM to around 6 or 7 PM monday-friday and from around 10 AM to 3 PM on saturdays. Sundays and holidays CLOSED, mind you.

Bear in mind that there are high taxes on alcohol and be prepared that the cheapest bottle of beer will cost you around 10 SEK (little over 1 euro).

And as alcohol is quite expensive in the clubs swedish people tend to start the evening in some friend's apartment or house with a couple of beers or a bottle of wine. Maybe you'll do the same in your hotel room...

    What to buy: Alcohol

    All kinds of shops: Drottninggatan

    by Rojo72 Written Jul 9, 2005

Drottninggatan is not a shop but the main street in the city centre. It runs east-west through all of the city centre and has loads and load of shops. Until the new mall opens next year or so this is the place to shop for almost anything.

The shops are located between the corner where the fire started in 1865 (by Stadium store) and McDonalds.
