    Karlstad University is one of the youngest universities in Sweden, but that's only due to the fact that there are two different kinds of universities here, "Universities" and "high schools" (which are universities, not american high schools). When I started studying here in 1991 there was about 4500 students here, nowadays it's over 10000.

    The university library is newly built and well worth a visit too. It's located on the court of the University, to the left in the picture.

    The Centre of the City

    In the centre of the city you also can visit the Cathedral or The Town square and The Peace Monument. Karlstad School Museum is located opposite to the Cathedral. The museum has a large collection of school objects, educational material from mid 19th century and school uniforms. The former Prison was one of the first cell prisoners in Sweden when it was inaugurated in 1847. Today the prison has converted into a hotel, but there is a museum in the cellar where you can see how the solitary confinement cells looked like. The old Stone Bridge is Sweden's longest stone arch bridge.

    Karlstad hasnt coast but it has a small beach near the city, in the river, where people can bath in summer.

    When Norway broke away from the union with Sweden in 1905, a century of peace was under threat. The conflict was solved during negotiations held in Karlstad. In September 1905 both parties agreed to go to their separate ways peacefully. In the centre of the city you also can visit the Cathedral or The Town square and The Peace Monument.

    The river Klaralven flows through the centre of Karlstad. It rises high in the Norwegian hills and forms a beautiful delta as in empties into Lake Vanern. Now there are a very nice park near it.

    • If you come here during the summer you really should get out into the nature. There are many different ways to do that. Fishing,kajaking, walking, boattrip u name it
    The scenery is really peaceful and relaxing. Its almost free!

    Make it out to Lake Vanern if you can. It is really beautiful! The lake is HUGE and looked like part of the ocean. We went fishing there and caught a 300 gram Abborre (Perch) which was fun.

    • If you like history and if you´d like to see how schools looked like,perhaps sit at a desk or see what they used to punish the students with in the 18-19th century. A visit to the small museum in the middle of karlstad is well worth a visit
